Default Timing Chain Causing Knock

I bought a LS2 from a 06 GTO that was wrecked (bought from the owner not a junk yard) before he wrecked it he said it developed a knock with no loss of oil pressure or power(he never stopped driving it and probably put a few thousand miles on it with the knock) It is stock with 28K miles . I pulled the oil pan off and see no signs of a problem with the bearings or pistons, etc., but when I roll it over by hand I get a ticking noise that seems to come from the timing chain. I can see the chain kind of "jiggle" when it makes the noise, almost sounds like a piece of metal is loose when it happens. I am going to take the cover off and see what it looks like inside, but just wanted to get an opinion to see if anyone thinks the knock could have come from this. Thanks in advance!

I removed the timing chain cover and the chain has a lot of slack, it is hitting the black triangular piece (dampener?) and that is what is making the tapping noise when i turn the motor over by hand.

If the motor had a bad main or rod bearing, would I be able to hear it while turning it over by hand with the pan off? The only noise I hear when turning it over is the chain.

Put a new chain on it and try turning it over by hand again. Most likely the problem will be gone then. Chains do stretch, and unfortunatly, the amount of stretch usually goes hand in hand with how hard the engine has been driven.

I do know it was driven hard, he told me about that. I just didn't think the knock was coming from the bearings after i took the pan off. He drove it for a few thousand miles with the knock and until the wreck with no loss of power and without it getting worse. Other mototrs with bad bearings would not be able to be driven for that long without getting worse or coming loose, at least in my experences.

I just wanted to get everyone elses opinion on this. I would much rather change the chain and gears and keep the crank and pistons in place.

Thanks again!

I have an LS2 GTO with 120,000 miles...timing chain is a JHP double roller with about 70,000 miles on it. It had a lot of slack when I replaced the cam/lifters due to a lifter failure (5,000 miles ago), and it has the same sort of noise you describe when rotating by hand. When running, however, there is no "knock" whatsoever.

I'm not a mechanic...just work on my own car since everyone else that touches it seems to **** **** up, but my vote is that the timing chain and the knock are completely unrelated.

I figured when it is running it is likely not hitting because the dampener does not have any wear marks. Next thing I will check is if I have a loose wrist pin.
