Cam Choice LS3 A4
Cam Choice LS3 A4 I'm looking to swap a stock 2010 LS3 with a upgraded 4L70e trans. with a 3200 stall into my 1990 Trans Am. It will have stock exhaust manifolds going to a y pipe merging into a aftermarket cat back system. This car will be full weight (3600) and be driven as much as possible with the occasional trip to the drag strip. I want this to be a very aggressive street car. My only upgrade to the engine will be cam and Patriot double springs. I recently got a Comp Cam 227/243 .614 .624 on a 114. I was wondering what you guys think this should make to the wheels for hp through a (3.73) 10 bolt rear. Would you use this cam or go with another one? Which one? I know the stock exhaust manifolds are a big bottle neck, but the cost for swap headers do not fit into this swaps budget. In addition this car might get sprayed with a 150 hp wet shot.
440-450 rwhp through the auto. That would probably dyno 470ish through a 6sp.
Edit: Just saw no headers. You wont even break 400 with manifolds on. Too much cam... reversion issues... blah blah.

Point me towards a cheap set of mild steel headers that work in a 1990 Trans Am LS swap and I would be all over them. The problem is that all I can find are Hawk's for $650 and up.

That is a miserable cam choice for stock manifolds. The reversion caused by them will cost you dearly in power production. If you are for sure going to stick with manifolds, then you must choose a cam that will make your engine less sensitive to back pressure. Something like a 223/230 .610/.609 115LSA +3. That would work well on motor and on the spray.

the hawks swap headers are a very nice piece for a third gen. Thats what i ran in my camaro when i built it. i know they are $$$, but like all stainless headers, they are definitly worth it. if your going to run manifolds, just keep the stock cam in the motor until you can afford LT's, then swap the headers and cam in at the same time and go.

Thanks for your advice Patrick. If I stay with manifolds then I will contact you to get a cam speced out. The last one you speced for me worked awesome. Do you think the cam I mentioned above is ok if I bite the bullet and get headers?
It's still a ridiculous cam choice for an LS3 with headers. Way too much exhaust duration. A 227/234 113-114LSA cam would be a much better choice with headers.
