Question DOD/AFM question

Does anyone know what the item in the oil pan near the oil filter on Active Fuel Management engine is for? I plan to use an LS3 oil pan along with AFM on my engine build. Is this a necessary part of the AFM system and what is its purpose?

That is the AFM oil pressure relief valve. Really only needed on engines with AFM but now gm installs the valve on all engines oil pans. Its only purpose is to bleed off pressure to protect afm components.

If you are doing a fresh engine build, do yourself a favor and rid yourself of all the AFM junk and plug that relief valve in the pan.
