Default What went wrong?

Stock L76 Engine from my G8 GT

Accelerated hard 0-80 and ka-boom at about 70 mph

Valve springs are good, Rod is connected tight. It is cylinder #5
looks like the piston fell apart and part of it was forced against the block making a hole on its way to the oil pan.... But why the failure?

Pic #5 shows the oil looking like it's NEVER been changed! Was there any oil in the pan?

To many rpms would be my guess. How many rpms was it turning when it blew? How many miles on the engine. I agree with S10xGN that oil pan looks nasty, I've taken pans off motors with over 200,000 miles and they looked better.

Yes oil was always changed every 7000 miles or before with the 8.8 qt pan. 99% of miles are easy highway miles as i live in the country. I believe the oil looks nasty because of the large amount of coolant mixed in the pan and then sitting for a couple weeks mixed not to mention the gas getting squirted in as well.

I was turning about 5500 rpms when it let loose.
