Default Help with my LS7 build

Here is what I have so far:

Fresh LS7 shortblock (Diamond flat top pistons)
GM Performance LSX LS7 cast heads (6 bolt)
Katech Torquer 110 Cam
Holley Hi Ram intake
Fast 102 MM TB
Stock LS7 injectors
1 5/8 sand rail headers

This is going in my 2800lb sand rail. Although I enjoy the drags I need more mid range power than top end.

Will this be a good combo for my intended use?

Should I mill the heads?

What kind of power should this combo make? The old tired stock LS7 made 412HP and 431TQ to the wheels behind a Mendeola S4S trans with the headers listed above.

I am hoping to put down 500+ with the new combo/fresh engine. I believe a 20% drivetrain loss is average for a car with my transmission/cv's.

Looks ok, except for the headers, 1 5/8 is very small for an exhaust primary, at the very least I would put some time into port matching the headers, its very simple and hard to screw up.

Stock C6 Z06 makes 440rwhp, so your driveline is soaking up an extra 5%. Most engines with your combination will make around 530rwhp without a CNC ported head, I understand the LSX-LS7 heads are as cast version. Program notes I see the following:

• “As-Cast” ports can be ported for maximum air flow or used as is -- intake port flows approximately 335cfm @ 0.600” lift and the exhaust flows approximately 215cfm @ 0.600” lift
• Heavy Duty PAC springs for a maximum lift of 0.650” for hydraulic roller cam applications.
LS7 CNC production heads flow 358 cfm @ .600 I recall, so the as cast LSX-LS7 heads are down on flow.

Based on this, you may make 500rwhp.

Anything to change? CNC port heads, CNC port Holley manifold and different headers (1 7/8), I don't see a reason to mill the heads.

Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the input. I can port match the existing headers for now. No one makes an off the shelf 1 7/8" sand car header and a custom built exhaust is out of the budget for this year.

I might talk to Patrick G or one of these cam consultants to spec you a grind that will compliment that Holly intake manifold. The Torquer cam im sure would work great with a composite intake (FAST, MSD, Stock LS7) but i think with that high ram there may be more ideal valve events to compliment that intake.

I probably wouldnt get too aggressive with the compression either. Since sand rails frequently operate in hot ambient temperatures it may be a better idea just to leave it stock compression.

Engine builder called and a couple of my rods are iffy so it looks like I am going with a 4.125 Callies comp start crank, Scat rods with ARP 2000 bolts and Diamond pistons.
I picked up a new set of WCCH stage 2 heads.

Still have to decide on the cam and what cc pistons.
