Default Largest Cam Specs for LS2 with Stock Converter?

I have been searching for information on this and I am finding wildly conflicting information. I am trying to decide on a cam for my 2006 GTO with LS2. I will be retaining the stock converter for now. I want to go with a cam that is large enough so the the effort is worth it but not too big to where my car wants to stall out or push through the brakes.

I contacted CamMotion and they told me the largest I would want to go is their Stage 1 cam: 212/216 dur, .552/.535 lift, 115 LSA.

VCM recommends for stock stall their VCM E5 cam: 221/221 dur, .585/.585 lift, 116 LSA.

Texas speed cam with stock stall: 220/220 dur, .600/.600 lift, 114 lsa.

The Cam motion cam's specs are not much better than stock so I really don't want that one. The VCM and Texas Speed cams are much more in line with what I want but are much bigger that the Cam Motion.

So who is right? This is confusing as hell. Please help.

We regularly have customers use our 224/224 114lsa and I've known guys go a little larger in an ls2. Just fyi though. Even though you can run a cam doesn't mean you are going to be happy with it. You are going to notice that at low rpm you car is going to feel really sluggish without the larger stall. The larger you go the more this is going to come into play. I would really recommend going with something vs nothing.

Cam with stock stall and gears? What gears are in your car....2.93?

If I were in your position, running all stock parts, I would pass on a cam and focus elsewhere. For example.....3.70 gears and a 3000 stall TC would make your car MUCH more responsive than just a cam. And the car will REALLY come alive when you eventually do a cam.

IJS.....

Gears are 3.46. I am not looking to make my car as fast as possible off the line. My GTO is mainly a daily driver. I am just looking for more power with as broad a power and trq curve as possible. I may go to a higher stall later but for now I will stay stock.

Thanks for the advice. I have noticed on your website that now pretty much all of Texas Speed's cams are .600 lift regardless of duration and LSA. Why is this?

Most likely because LSx heads continue to build air flow to at least .650" of lift. If the capability is there....and suitable springs are readily available, might as well go there.

You surely talking about aftermarket heads with FAST intakes correct?

Cuz no stock head short of the LS7 is building airflow to at least .650 lift and you can forget about any stock intake flowing well at that kinda liflt.

Yes.....about every ported or aftermarket head will flow up to .650". And my OEM intake in my '95 Impala does fine with my .668" lift cam.

The intake don't know or care about cam lift.

A small converter will make your car faster than a cam. And a converter is the single biggest thing that will determine the streetability of your car.

Also, if you are asking questions on lift, you really need to educate yourself on how the valvetrain works. I recommend this: https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...alvetrain.html
