P2V clearance

Default P2V clearance

Is there an easier/equally effective way to check P2V clearance beside the modeling clay method on the LS3?

You can install a light "checking" valve spring, an adjustable pushrod set to 0 lash, a dial indicator on the rocker arm tip directly above the valve stem. You then roll the motor over where PTV is closest, and push the valve down and measure how far it moves, before contact. Roll the motor a bit more, and repeat. Do this around the area where the piston is near the top. The smallest reading is your PTV clearance. Do this for both intake and exhaust.

Good info. I saw that method also. I'll do that. Another question. I'm gathering tools for that and the base to hold that dial is magnetic. How will that be compatible with this aluminum block? Is there another base out there to attach to an aluminum block, or will I have to improvise somehow?

Magnetic base obviously won't stick to aluminum. Either will have to fab a way to bolt it down, or get a different type. Comp Cams has one that bolts to the heads, or you could get the vice grip flex type from Harbor Freight. I have both, and use both, depending on what I'm doing. I'm not a Harbor Freight fan, but for what it costs, it works pretty well.
