Default LS3 in early bronco cam advice

alright you read right....an LS3 in an early bronco. Trying to decide whether to swap the ASA cam or LS hot cam into my bronco. It Will be used as a driver, not a mudder. It's a restoration project so all specs are up in the air. I have the bronco and just bought the ls3. Going to build the motor and chassis this winter while body is getting done elsewhere.

I, personally, would call one of the vendors on this site and have them spec you a cam, or at least recommend the proper off the shelf cam to fit your exact build. Tire size, differential gears, transmission/stall, intake and exhaust system being used, it all changes what that cam has to do. And it is a decision best left to those who do it for a living.

ASA cam: 226/236 .525/.525 110+4
Hot cam: 218/228 .525/.525 112+3

Out of those two choices, I would think the Hot-cam would make for a better daily driver, depending on the gears and stall used. Granted, I prefer small cams, so I may be biased. That is why I said these decisions are best left to the professionals.

How much does the Bronco weigh?
What Transmission do you have?
If an auto.....what stall TC do you plan to run?
What rear gear are you looking to run?
What diameter tire are you using?

Choosing the right cam isn't JUST about the engine or the projected use.....it's also about the vehicle.

I knew it wouldn't be as simple as "you should go with this cam". That's why we ask questions on here! Anyway, bronco weighs in at close to 3,700 lbs, planning on 4.11 rear, 4l60e trans with stock gearing, can change stall to whatever is needed at this point (I don't have a TC yet). Tires are 33's. Stock intake and I can't tell you on exhaust. Early broncos are a tight fit on exhaust manifolds so I'm going to have to wait until I get the current engine out and look at clearances. Headers if they will fit.

If this were going to be a daily driver, I'd look at something along the line of the Lingenfelter GT-1 cam. It's a relatively mild and very streetable cam that gives real good power with the stock heads. Real good idle quality, no cam surge, really good for a daily driver. You'll need 'better than stock' valve springs with this cam.

If you were looking to get closer to max power but still have relatively good drivability, then look at something along the lines of the Lingenfelter GT1-1 cam. This cam will have a noticeable lope at idle, will have good low RPM power and will pull strong all the way up to the limits of the stock intake (about 6000 to 6200 RPMs)....all with very minimal cam surge. You might want to consider bumping up to about a 2800 to 3200 stall torque converter with this cam. This is the cam in my 4300 LB, 95 Impala.....like it a lot!

All that being said, I'd choose a cam with less than 9* of valve overlap. This may hurt top end power a bit, but it'll definitely make for a MUCH better street ride.

Best of luck!

According to Cam Motion's event calculator, the ASA cam has 11 degrees of overlap, whilst the Hot cam has -1 degrees. Just for reference.
