Default 2005 Yukon

Hello all,

I recently purchased a 2005 Yukon Denali and although I told my wife it was going to remain stock after reading about how easy the 6.0l motor makes extra power I think a cam swap is in my near future. Has anyone had luck with a particular vendor or cam grinder in this format? Also, any other items that need to be addressed at the same time?

End of the day this is a commuter weekend fun truck for me. My goal is to make it more fun while maintaining reliability. I have a M3 race car, and a twin turbo 135I so I don't ever plan on doing any type of racing.

Talk to Cam Motion or Brian Tooley about their truck cams. They'll point you in the right direction. Full exhaust will also help.

When you say full exhaust do you mean headers and full cat back? Are the stock mafolds very restricitve?

Yeah that's what I mean. Speed Engineering I believe has some very reasonable headers and y pipes. Now you may have to call to see if they fit the Denali since it's AWD but exhaust and a tune will be a good start.

you also might look on performancetrucks.net to see what guys are running with the stock converter, which will probably be a bigger barrier to power than the stock manifolds.

as far as additional items that need upgrading when you swap a cam, i'd say at the least some good springs and pushrods are required.

depending on how aggressive you go, you also may consider upgrading the rocker trunnion bearings and timing chain.

common cam for the 5.3/6.0 truck motors is the 206/212 or the 212/218. The 212/218 will make about 10-12hp more then the 206/212 at peak and stronger midrange, but give up a little low speed tq. These cams will yield +40-50hp(flywheel) over the stock cam. You can also run stock 60.00 LS6 springs and stock push rods with these cams.

yeah thats right around where i'd go with a stock converter duration and lift wise.

OP, you will also need a tune to compliment the cam change. Thats probably the most key aspect of getting all your ponies from it.
