Default High mile LY6

Picked up a complete pull out ly6/4l80 from an express van. Gauge cluster was gone but salvage paperwork verified it "ran good" when brought in. I just thought to enter vin into car fax and it shows 227000 last reported mileage.

This is going in my 86 C10. Was planning to put it on a stand and check compression and then put new gaskets, cam, valve train and swap.

With the mileage so high I'm not sure what direction to go. What's the cost to replace bearings/rings/assemble? I'm thinking more than I have in the motor.

Opinions?

I wouldn't do anything to it other than upgrade the valve springs. The solid intake valves are heavy and known to drop. I'd try BTR and ask Brian what springs he recomends. Toss it in and see how it runs. That mileage wouldn't scare me at all. Not on a LS platform.

It 100% depends on how it was maintained. Is it caked with sludge on the inside? If you're like me and don't like changing motors at oil change intervals I would at least inspect everything. My 39k mile LY6 has significant carbon buildup on the rings and ringlands and I was glad I removed them to clean. I also inspected the rod bearings and they were perfect but also got peace of mind. It's also nice to inspect the lifters to see if any of them are starting to come apart.

Alocker has a excellent advice. Pull the intake valley cover and def. check the lifter/cam lobes for wear.
