Default 24x in a ls3

I recently bought a ls3 for my 2001 camaro Z28. I was wondering if I could put a 24x reluctor instead of the 58x and not have to spend the money on the conversion box. I the motor is apart right now.

Yep! There is a special tool for aligning the reluctor if you want to do it yourself. Heat to 450 degrees and slide on. Many suggest a couple of spot welds also but of course that can get into warping and checking/verifying runout and such.

If this is likely a one-time deal, bring your crank to a machine shop that is familiar with LS engines and they should be able to swap it for you for about $100 I think. Just make sure they truly are LS knowledgeable. It's not a complicated job but one that must be done precisely or you'll be chasing your tail forever with a bad crank signal.

That's what I figured if I don't go with a 58x. Just constantly be chasing gremlins.

Swapping the reluctor wheels is very easy, only took me 15mins to do it. I don't know why people are so afraid of it. You don't need special tools or anything, once you look at both the 24t and 58t it will be pretty obvious what need to be done.

Post up a how-to. I'm thoroughly interested but have worried myself enough about being a degree or so off(hard to eyeball) such that I was planning to buy the alignment jig this year. Enlighten me please!

What about cam sensor? Isn't it different too? Or can that be done by a different timing chain cover plate?

You just use and LS2 timing cover, cam sensor, and 1X cam gear. That's what I have on my 418.

Hi Kevin, THREE other items.
1. Fit the Black Crank Sensor
2. Weld "stitch" the 24xe TW onto the crankshaft
3. Reverse the two outside wires in the CAS connector

We do this quite often and even have 24x ls3 shortblocks already done for us aa well so the end user has no issues.
There are a few other things youll need as well.
