Default Look at what I found!

After a fresh motor build I started hearing a tapping sound. I pulled the valve cover and wala a pushrod had come from under the rocker arm. Put it back in place , started the car and it ran fine.

Few questions.

What caused this?
Should I take the heads off and inspect further?
Should I just keep driving it and Racing it?

I would replace that rocker/rocker pair. That thing is damaged. I'd also replace that pushrod.

I would say a valvetrain that isn't completely controlled could throw a pushrod like that. I would replace that rocker and that pushrod and see what it does. I don't know if I'd pull the head yet. But I'd be thinking about it.

But my question is how did it happen in the first place. Collapsed lifter? Over reving?

i had the same problem on my old 87 mustang. I had to use pushrod guides. I hate aftermarket rockers. Too many problems

Who knows. If the lifter went into loft, then when it crashed back down, could have vaulted the pushrod off.

Or the cup on the YTs is not as deep as stock and it was able to spin free?

I don't know.

Put a magnet down in there and pull the lifter up. Then get a borescope or something in the adjacent pushrod hole and see if you can get a look at the wheel or cam lobe.

That area is not an area of concern for the rocker it will be just fine, the reason it came off from under is must likely the push rod was off the lifter cup when installed was overlooked and the minute it went in became loose at the top IMO.
