Default LQ9 6.0 Help

Hello Guys,

I have a 6.0 that I am building for a S10. The truck will be driven daily and pulling my motorcycles from time to time.
The 6.0 has the 317 heads with the factory intake but no throttle body. I also have a TBSS intake and throttle body. Which intake would you suggest I use? I have headers for it also.
What I need help with is cam choice. One maybe that talks a little bit, but one that is daily friendly.
Would like to have 400hp or so at the crank.
I am sorry for the questions, I have always been a Pontiac guy. The LS stuff is new to me.
Thanks for your time and suggestions.
David

Leave the engine alone, put the TBSS intake and TB on, put the Engine and Trans. in and
get it running, the swap will nickel and dime you like nobody's business.
After you get it in and running then decide if you want to do the cam swap, the LQ9
won't disappoint, pulling the Radiator and other stuff for the cam swap is no big deal
after you get it all running. My point is the cam swap will domino and turn into this and that,
(pushrod length, rocker arm upgrade etc...) and take that much more time to actually enjoying the ride, you should also consider a bigger Brake swap. My .02

You will love the LS engine. The power they make is extraordinary. With a stock 6.0 and headers, you can make 400 RWHP, but it requires a fairly aggressive camshaft and a high stall converter. What transmission do you have?

I have a 4l65e and a 4l80e trans. I was looking for 400 or so at the crank.
I believe this motor is around 350-360 at the crank in stock form [ I think ].

a 6.0 will make 400 crank with like, headers alone. 400 wheel with a small-medium cam, i made 430 wheel with a fairly large cam 235/243 .630.630 112lsa (i daily it, but i can see why others would not). No need for a high stall with those kind of goals, stock one will take it fine and youll make plenty of low end torque with that kind of cam

A great cam for a stock stall setup is The Torque Titan:

Also put as much tire(275's) as possible, the rear end (7.5) is a Loser also. May hold up as long as you don't go trying to Win a burn out contest for a drift event. I've spoken with a few Ls s10 swap owners and it can get from under you Quick. That's from 5.3's with cam and mildly worked heads. The back end is feather weight one guy uses 2 60lbs bags in the rear to try not to lose it in any rain type situations.

Current Performance* has all your major or small needs for the Ls S10 swap also.

If you look around you might be able to find a rear end from a sec gen S-10 standard shift. They have 8.5's in them and wouldn't blow up on you like the 7.5's will.

Ford 8.8 out of a late 90's early 00's Explorer. You even get disc brake with the later models and their Plentiful. They go for $200. Had the same ? for the same build. Need to have mine shorten and set up for coil-overs and ladder bars(gotten the latter). IDK about the shortening gotta call my guy and ask how muck for notching and boxing the rear. The boxing is a must but 305's go on easy with correct back spacing. Saw-zaw, mini's tubs and a good welder and your in relatively cheap for a decent rear end set up. The tabs or mounts on the rear-end, just need to be moved for shocks - leafs / springs & shocks for coilovers.

I THINK '97 on up Explorers had the rear discs. I remember when I had a '94 with drums I was thinking of doing a conversion to discs, but then Ford made them standard on the '97's(I THINK, lol). I got a '98, and I think they came on the year before.

Yea I've got my 99 for $200 but, LKQ has them for $175 you just have to do the work & pull it. Elijah my mechanic said he wouldn't pull it as it was like *103 & said" just add 25 bucks and he'd go pick it up from a salvage yard he has....Seen this guy who has 335's on the rear of his 406sbc - S10. I'm still speech-less with how good it sat. Honestly I'm trying to copy him but need to find out about the cost of notching the frame. Everything else was listed by my suspension guy so I just pay for Labor. 305's do work without notching as he's done 4 or 5, 1st gen s10 trucks.

I have 315/35/17 out back, that is about all I can get under it now.

I found a 8.5 out of a v-6, 5 speed blazer. Got it for $75 from the pull-a-part.

You will want to get one from 98 to 02 Explorer that had the factory 5.0 v8. They have 31 spline axles, a LSD and almost always 3.73s. And the tag code should have 3L73 on it, if there's a 3 73 like that with a space between 3 and 7 it has no ls. And if it's under an explorer, it’s an 8.8 regardless.

Btw, a LQ9 is Gen III motor not a Gen IV.

Quick update.
I sold my 317 heads and picked up a set of 243. I will be using a GM hot cam, along with a TBSS intake.
Waiting on my block, had to get it bored and cleaned up.
I hope to do this swap in November, I have two weeks off then.
