cam designations

cam designations reading about cams. understand lift, duration, LSA. don't understand the numerical designation used when discussing different cams, ie,a 235 cam is more aggressive than a 231 cam. is this a reference to the intake duration, or something else

The above is also true. Usually, if a single number is mentioned, it is the duration of both intake and exhaust. If Intake and exhaust are different, then you would see a number like 231/235, where they are intake/exhaust.
