Default LS2 teardown question.

I've pulled apart an ls2 out of a GTO and i see #6 appears to be a different color. Indication that it's spun a bearing and had work done? I know it has a cam, and ls3 springs, but I don't know how to tell if this is normal.

The ls2 are natorious for spinning rod bearings in the platforms with front sump pans. It is possible it was spun at one time and rebuilt. That rod looks be a new one.

Funny, I just pulled my 2005 GTO LS2 with 105K for making a "ticking" noise and found #6 rod bearing to be thrashed! It hadn't spun yet, but it couldn't have been far from it.

If your engine has some miles on it, pull the rod/piston and check the big end size without the bearing in it and see if it's still round. Then check the bearing clearance with the crankshaft.

It's out now, better to be safe than sorry and have to repeat the job of pulling it out.

If it was rebuilt i wouldnt tear it down. Talk with the original owner of it. They make oil pickup tubes to fix the front sump oil psi issues. My tbss had a spun bearing when i got it. I rebuilt motor and added the pcm of nc pickup tube for added insurance. Havnt had any issues so far. A extra quart of oil helps as well

I wish i could talk to the previous owner, but i picked the car up as a salvage. I was mainly interested in checking the bearings, but it looks like it could be a new rod, so i'm hesitant to open it up further.

The Grey RTV sealer all over the pan gasket is a dead give away that some one was inside the engine.

Usually the pan gasket is riveted to the pan from the factory to keep it in place during assembly. A small amount of grey sealer is applied to the front and rear covers where they meet the block.

That's why it always helps to have some one else look something over when you are un-sure.

I would have never guessed a floating pin rod would bend the way it did on my engine. It's a first for me, that's for sure!

Well, good that you caught it! And yeah, a second set of eyes can never hurt!

Single bolt cam? If so most likely a stock ls2 cam same specs as a ls6 cam. If u wanna swap cam convert to 3 bolt cam and a 3 bolt gen4 cam sprocket from gm.

Not to split hairs, but the LS2 is the same as the EARLY LS6 cam, which is 204/211, .525/.525, 116 LSA. The late LS6 is 204/218, about .550/.547, 116 LSA.

Stock cams have the dot matix on all but the Performance catalog cams if I remember right. If it's GM the 4 digit number (8753) will match up with a cam part number in the catalog.
