Default My ls3 smokes

The ls3 crate engine in my 62 corvette smokes until the engine warms up. The engine has been in the car for about 7 years now and only has 7000 miles on it. After it warms up for a few minutes the smoke stops. Any ideas or suggestions on what could be the problem. It started when the engine had about 5000 miles on it. Thanks, Bob

Black or blue smoke? If it's black and only during warmup, it's running way too rich on the cold mode cycle.

With ethanol fuel, it’s not the same as it was. Used to be black smoke was fuel, and blue was oil. Nowadays, the ethanol cause a whiteish/blueish color, particularly under flooded, or way too rich conditions.
You need to pull your plugs and look at them. If it’s burning oil, the plugs will tell.

This might be subjective, but could you tell what the smoke smelled like? Gas and oil smokes smell different. Coolant different yet.

Maybe leaking injectors? Check plugs. Is it drinking oil?

I would do a compression test. U could try unhooking the ect sensor once warm, which will command a -40* coolant temp. If its a cold start enrichment issue, it should smoke with it unplugged (over fueled) . SHOULD.

Also wouldnt be a bad idea to add a wideband to monitor fueling.

White is typically coolant.

Do a leakdown test on every cylinder. you could have a slight leak in one of the cylinders until the engine warms up and the aluminum expands.

I had a 2003 RX-7 that had a cracked rear plate. When it was started cold, it would crop dust the whole neighborhood lol. I mean BAD. But once it warmed up, the steel expanded and the car ran great except when high vacuum after
a Boosted run at WOT where it would "Suck" the coolant into the rotor chamber. Had the engine rebuilt and all was good for 10 years till I sold it.

Also,
Get in there and smell the smoke. Coolant has a sweet smell to it. You can tell the difference between Fuel, oil and Coolant.

I always was taught oil smoke only during startup was bad valve seals letting oil down into the cylinder whole cold.
