Default Need help!

I’ve searched and searched but I can’t find any help. Just did a cam swap on my 2010 Silverado. I went with the Elgin 1841 cam and the springs they recommended. I know the cam is a .595 & 238/242. The springs Elgin recommend we’re the 9937 which I think has a recommended lift at .600. Did the swap and had 5 star tuning do whatever they did. So far I’ve broke 2 valve springs in just about the exact same spot. Before the broke springs I did a live data with the tune and my fuel trim is reading about 29/30%. Checked the timing advance on cyl 1 and it’s reading at 47 degrees at around 700-800 rpm at idle and warmed. I have a feeling the springs aren’t anywhere near enough for this cam. I don’t think this tune is right also. Do you think the pac 1219 would be a better spring to go with? And do you think the tune is way off?

The PAC 1218 is the usual go to spring for the Sloppy Stage 3 camshaft but the PAC 1219 works also. Those Elgin springs should work with that cam, that said, I would go with a better spring. Have you checked for coil bind? Who set up the heads? Any spring shims stacked on top of the factory type seat seal combination? Two new broken springs I'd be looking for something mechanical.

Haven’t checked for coil bind yet. Pulled the valve cover and saw the spring and walked inside. A good friend that works at a reputable speed shop did all the work for me because I just didn’t have time on the weekend with a new born. Do you think just a normal beehive spring will work or should i go dual? I check live data before the 2nd spring decided to break and the fuel trim on both sides are showing 29-30% and and timing was showing 47 degrees at 700/800 rpm at operating temp

Double check the spring retainer to valve guide clearance also.

Once I get back home I’m going to check. If I was dealing with coil bind wouldn’t you think the pushrod would have bent? Just running scenarios right now. I know I would get the right answer until I start digging further

Yes that camshaft pairs well with the PAC 1218 springs or the PAC 1219's. Some people go dual for piece of mind hoping the inner will keep the valve from dropping. At high RPM no way the inner spring is going to keep the valve off the piston in that scenario. The .660 lift dual springs will add weight, unnecessary spring pressure leading to a slight bit of parasitic hp loss. It's an option but if there is a mechanical issue with the heads or setup no spring is going to live in that environment. If you're looking for the best beehive on the market for street or road racing look at the PSI 1511ML springs. They are priced about with the .660" dual spring.

Yes possibly... I'd roll them on a glass table top or something flat to check. It's possible you got a bad batch of those Elgin springs BUT setup issues must be eliminated before coming to that conclusion. If not you could lose the engine.

Thank you for all the info. A friend has a set of BTR springs but he can’t remember the specs of it. He should be getting back to me soon I hope. Check spring install height also?

No coil bind, push rods are still straight and I checked the install height and it was right at 1.800

I’m on the verge of ordering a new set of springs. My buddies btr springs wouldn’t work for my cam. I have it narrowed down to pac 1219 or liberty performance springs. I can get liberty stuff through work at cost but I have never sold a set or know if they will put me in the same position I’m in now. Does anybody know about the company or should I stay away from them?

If anybody is wondering I got it situated. Looks like the springs where the culprit. Found out I had 7 broken springs and you couldn’t tell until you pull it out. It was broke right at the retainer. The new springs were at 1.8 install height. Timing went down and the fuel trim has leveled out also

I’m not seeing anything broken there?
anyway, a lot of **** springs on the market.
If real PAC 1219’s, they will be fine.

The one on the left is one of the unbroken ones. When I get back home I’ll snap a few of the broken ones

Cool, thanks.
a buddy had multiple **** springs break, Amazon kits. White box stuff. And the cam was only .550” lift.

FWIW, the BTR platinum is an excellent spring.

Hope you get it back to the dyno!

Pretty hard to go wrong with PAC. I'd never trust any valvetrain items Amazon sells. I'm sure Jeff Bezos lost sleep over your plight
