L92 help and mild build
L92 help and mild build Hey everyone. I have a decent running non DOD L92 out of a 07 Denali. Recently have developed a slight rear main seal leak and really need to replace the drivers side engine mount as well as a few exhaust manifold studs. Seems like a good time to pull the motor and do a few upgrades while I am in there.
strongly considering ditching the VVT cam and going to a very mild fixed cam (VVT delete) with some decent valve springs, new oil pump, and of course resealing everything. Since this motor is in a heavier 4WD vehicle that does tow a bit I want to focus on torque and mid range power but don’t mind a little bit of a rough idle. I plan on pulling the heads and inspecting the cylinders and pistons while I have her out.
any other advice or recommendations.

VVT gets a bad rap, no doubt. I experimented with VVT in an LS2 and with the help of Mast Motorsports, I found a lot of torque with the system. If I were looking for torque and mid-range as you are, keep the VVT. There are aftermarket VVT cams that will impress you in the torque department. The only real advantage of getting rid of the VVT is top end power, which a VVT setup can help with, but it gets tricky with high RPM. The VVT solenoid utilizes oil pressure to keep valve timing in check, and at high rpm it can and will move a tad. For a towing rig, VVT is king.

Since you have the heads off, bump the compression to make more power everywhere. A full point is 14hp and 20tq (10.4 to 11.4) and it is due to higher dynamic compression which is why advancing a cam makes more power, but at the expense of driving manners. Thinner gaskets also narrows the quench which gives the tq increase without detonation.
Do not narrow the LSA or advance the cam from the stated specs.
