Default ATI Crank Pin Problem

Just used the ATI 918993 kit to pin my crank. I must have gone to much rpm with the reamer because the pin just falls through the crank. ATI said I can use loctite. Should I do that or drill another spot on the crank?

Put the pin in a bench vice and squeeze it hard enough to to make a small rise or burr on it. Then just tap it in. Just tap it in Happy. 😜

And just do that on one end? Then gently tap it?

Youll need a big enough burr to hold it in place. I’d try to make one arise lengthwise along the body. Don’t over-do this…it won’t take much to hold it. The red Loctite suggestion by ATI could work, but a super small rise or burr would ensure it’s not moving. Yes, gently tap it. If you have to pound on it, you’ve went too big with the marking. It should only require an easy tap with a small ball-peen.

Ok I get it now. Its not about smashing it to out of round. Just a little burr. Thanks!

Been there done that!
if you do another, use cutting/tap oil and go slow.

FWIW, I did the Loctite thing on my goofs. 😊

Exactly!! If the kit comes with a drill bit AND a reamer, the reamer should be used last, to remove only a small amount of metal, and as you say, use oil. Must be spun slowly, either by hand, or with a variable speed drill motor. The best way for the OP to fix this now would be to wander into a local machine shop, and have them knurl it on a lathe. Many shop guys are car guys, and it's such a little task, I'll bet they'd do it free. I know if I was still working, I would.....

The pin is hardened so I cant get it to burr.

Red Loctite will hold it in place, unless it’s a really sloppy fit.

There is also a special Loctite for looser parts/greater clearances. It may be green (?). Can't remember. More than one way to skin a cats ***! You don't have to run a hardened pin. This is a no wear item. If you have too much trouble, you could always have another pin made. It shouldn't be cost prohibitive. Perhaps metallizing it, etc. I'd try red loctite first, as Che70velle suggested, and go from there.......

Loctite 638 Retaining Compound, we used it at work to secure bearings in housings that were worn etc.
