Default Max bore on LSA?

Does the LSA block have thicker sleeves than other 6.2L blocks? I found one for sale that has supposedly been bored to 4.1” by Sampson Racing Engines. Supposedly they sonic checked the sleeves for thickness. Has anyone ever heard of a stock block being bored this big?

I’m thinking about buying it for a stroker build. I wouldn’t be adding boost.

LSA block might have a little more wall…maybe…but even if it does, it wouldn’t be enough to warrant .100 overbore. No way. Unless that particular block has been sleeved, I wouldn’t touch it.

.020 over (4.085) is the max you’ll find a shelf piston for, so you’ll be paying for custom pistons out of the gate.

That also assumes there is a ring set available in that size. There probably will be, but it will limit other options like material, thickness, 2nd ring design, oil tension, etc.
in other words you’ll end up forced into a ring set that isn’t optimal for what you want to do.

I may me mistaken, but I didn’t think you could accurately sonic an ls3/lsa block due to the ridges on the liner exterior.

lastly, I know it’s not exactly same stresses n/a stroker vs supercharged, but lsa’s regularly crack liners at the stock 4.065 size

I don’t think the guy really knows what he has. It sounds like he bought it from someone who already had it bored. I plan to inspect it later this week. I’ll measure the bore and check the deck flatness.

I talked to Sampson, and they said they don’t bore stock sleeves that far. Can you tell if it has aftermarket sleeves just by looking? I know the Darton MID wet sleeve are obviously different. I wasn’t sure what the dry sleeves looked like.

Oem sleeves will be flush with barrel at the bottom of the hole, whereas an aftermarket dry sleeve will extend into the crankcase 3/8” or so. Here’s a pic of one of my Darton sleeved blocks from the bottom. OEM liner will be flush…

Awesome! Thanks. I’ll look at the bottom of the sleeve to see if it is like yours.

Well, I measured the sleeves. They are about 5.5” long, and have a 4.1” bore. They looked pretty thin around the top flange. I don’t know who bored it that far, but it looked like it was used after being bored. The seller said he bought a CTSV that had this engine in it.

I’m gonna keep looking. I don’t trust this one to hold up. It needs to be bored .025” more to find pistons that will fit. That’s just too thin.

I think you made a good choice. I recently saw (somewhere!) some aftermarket sleeves that were the same length as OEM, but no idea what specs were. Damn memory....wish they could put a sim card up there, lol. No, that block has a lot of unknowns. I think you did good. There'll be another one......
