Default LS7 BTR Stg 4 V2

Does anyone have a Z28 LS7 or something with BTRs stg4 v2 cam installed? Im curious how the street driving manners are with it. Lota of bucking, low tq down low, feel slow at lower rpm? Stuff like that. I had been getting parts together to swap that cam in my car, but I dont race it and dont wanna make it super crap down low. I already have MSD atomic intake, NW 103mm tb, 2in kooks headers, PRC 285 heads and a custon ground cam. Just number chasing basically. Always wanted NA 600+.

You have a nice combo, should make 600+ no prob, but watch the details. I would port the intake for sure, run a good spring pack(not the regular .660 crap), bigger/better pushrods. Camming is subjective, but BTR is easy to talk too. Lingenfelter and Katech have proven LS7 cams too take time before you decide.

Tuner is key here. A good tuner can make a big cam seem fine driving (to a certain degree).

I ran the last variation of the BTR stage 3 in my Z06. I LOVED that cam. Sounded great, drove great, power everywhere, made great peak power, etc... I was snooping on the BTR site earlier and noticed that, in their respective dyno graphs, the BTR S3 V2 made a tad more power than the S4 V2. I would honestly go with the Stage 3 or even the Stage 2. Especially since you say you don't race the car. You'll enjoy the "beefier" bottom end of the smaller camshafts more than something that comes alive after 4500ish.

PRC 285s have a larger port and a bigger valve than most other heads for these cars, neither of which are good for driveability. A larger valves will make a cam behave like an even bigger cam.

I also have PRC 285s on my Corvette, as well as a cam that is damn near identical to the BTR stage 3 V2 cam (assuming the specs I saw are accurate). Mine is the GPI SS3 LS7 cam, 238/254 114+4. For the most part it drives pretty well, but it does have a slight buck to it around 1600 RPM, not really sure why, it's smoother around 1400 RPM and 1800 RPM. My tuner seems to be pretty good, but I don't think he has done a ton of big cam NA C6Zs, so I'm not sure if a more experienced would be able to get better results or not.

So if I were you, I would go with the BTR Stage 3 V2. If you look at BTR's website, the stage 4 V2 only made 9 hp more than the stage 3 V2 on the combination with the MSD intake, and it looks like it carried power past peak a little better, but that cam has around 34* of overlap, so I would imagine it's going to be tough to tame even for a pretty experienced tuner.

Whatever route you end up going, make sure you post your results!

Based on that BTR chart, the V3 is the way to go for a nicer street manners car. The 111 lobe (the tight lobe separation is good for hi-rpm scavaging) separation of the V4 will make it tougher to tune etc. and given very little difference in those dyno graphs the V3 looks pretty good. The reason the 114 v3 does pretty good there is the 114 moves the intake closing point further out which helps with higher rpms. I have a 455 LS with a 246 / 258 (24 degrees of overlap) on a 114 with Advanced Induction BR7 heads / Mamo MSD it made 757 hp at 6,700 on engine dyno. The car (C6 Z06 - stick car) drives pretty good the 3.90 gears helps and this is where a good tune will really shine. I would imagine a V3 cam would drive even better with 16 degrees of overlap. I think given you want good drivability and easier to tune this is a good case where the 9 hp (delta V3 vs V4) is not worth it.

what are your custom cam specs? If getting a higher dyno number, drag racing and straight line performance aren't your top priority, the BTR4V2 is pretty unnecessary. Like others mentioned, it's got a lot of overlap so tuning will only take it so far. It's going to buck at low rpm. Plus, with your MSD intake, you won't even be utilizing the full RPM potential of that cam, you are intake limited unless go high ram. I would stick with what you have if its similar to the BTR3v2 or change to the BTR3v2 if you want to change things up. You'll enjoy that powerband more.
