I bought some ls flat tops and they came with piston rings. The oil control expander has a wire in it.It runs through holes in the expander etc.Im assuming its supposed to stay there and not be removed but I have never seen a expander like this.Would love explanation for it or opinions on to keep it in there or take it off.It looks like it should stay by design just dont want to button engine up and find out it should of been removed..thanks in advance

Sounds like a "booster" spring, to add some tension to the expander.
Photos would help; butt if it's run through the entire thing, it's probably deliberate and intended to remain permanently, as opposed to a packing material kind of deal.

I've only ever seen such oil rings on diesel engines, and yes, you leave the wire in.
What brand of pistons/ rings is this?
