454LSX rebuild/upgrade

Default 454LSX rebuild/upgrade

Well last year I ended up buying what I thought was a great deal on a 2000 Chevy Silverado RCSB that was 4 link’d (dana 60 3.73) and had a 454LSX with 4l80e/circle d 3800 converter.

The history of this truck is that it was owned by one of my best friends in high school and he owned it for many years in a pretty much stock configuartion. He sold it to a friend of his who went nuts and threw a bunch of money into the truck. Well this was a while ago and he got sold on the whole 6 speed 4l80e bullshit scam and never had the truck shift or run properly. He had a shitty tuner from Horsepower Sales down here in FL they have been out of business for a LONGGG time thankfully.

In that time he had taken the LSX 454 and changed out all the scat internals for K1 Crank/Pistons/Rods, added Trickflow 260cc Ls7 heads, and a comp cams 54-471-11 (LS3 cam?????) 239/255 .625/.625 114lsa.

Now this was built 10 years ago and the truck sat for a while due to the transmission never working right and the tune was fat, fat, fat. So my friend ended up getting the truck back from his friend and changed the trans to a rebuilt 4l80e with circle d converter, and getting it tuned. The truck ran ok and He decided he wanted to sell it.

Since i was looking for another car at the time and always loved this truck I figured it would be bad on gas but fun and pretty reliable, boy was i wrong. After a month i was sick of the tune that was on it and had i retuned, the truck ran good for another month then started feeling weaker and weaker and was driving like **** so I asked around and endsd up meeting Dualquaddave on this forum. He ended up walking me through the process of elimination of what could be causing my issues and after a compression test, i knew i was in trouble.

80-90psi on every cylinder, but no glitter or metal in the oil so I pulled the engine and brought it to my builder. Builder took it apart and commented on how much unburnt black fuel was inside the heads and valves. He also said the tune must have been so rich it washed out the rings and that he would let me know more asap.

Well he called me yesterday and by the grace of god the internals look great, the bearings are excellent, the bores are perfect and I got off easy for once!!!!! Since this was built 10+ years ago, i want to take the opportunity to change out some of the older parts and get a bigger cam because that 239/255 seems pretty puny for a 454!!

it has a Holley High ram intake with shearer lid (old jaywww style) with deka 80 injectors. 1-7/8 kooks longtube headers into 3” x pipe true dual exhaust.

Can any of you guys suggest some cams that you recommend? I will most likely get cam motion to spec me something but always value the opinion of the forums.

Once this truck is back up and running ill likely sell it and focus on finishing this Rx7.

i checked out some Ls7 cams and they all seem to make the current cam seem tiny.

Why guess? Just make a call to Cam Motion with all your engine/truck specs and your goals. Let them grind you one to match what you're wanting.
