Kind of a generic valve train question
question: Is there a point in the engine cycle where all the valves on one bank will be closed?
context: my girlfriends 15 ss ls3 car started making some terrible engine racket, missing, and a metal on metal squeak kind of sound. She said she shut it off within a few seconds of it starting. I immediately suspected a collapsed lifter. Today while I’m tearing it apart, when I pulled the driver valve cover, every single valve on that bank was shut, all rocker arms basically dead even with each other. Everything appeared intact though, none of the rockers were loose feeling or anything. Thought to myself that that seemed odd but went on with the tear down.
On the passenger side I found one valve spring broke and laying off to the side of that pushrod, the valve was gone and obviously the rocker was off the push rod. Stuck a bore scope through the valve hole to see how bad it was and I saw a couple pieces of the valve on top of the piston, didn’t seem like enough pieces to be the whole valve but the best I could tell, the piston was still intact. I’m sure some of it is embedded in the head and some probably went out the exhaust since it was the exhaust valve . I’ll be pulling the head off after work to see the damage. Keeping my fingers crossed as she isn’t too thrilled with having to buy an engine, especially after having to buy a new (used) differential for me to put in about 3 months ago
does it sound like I should be expecting further issues on the driver side? Didn’t try turning it over as I was pressed for time to be at work, now I’m at work and it’s driving me nuts wondering if it is possible that there was a point in the cycle where one banks valves would all be closed
