Default plug heat range for road course engine

Was picking up my engine from the shop today finally and the owner asked "what plugs are you going to run" because my pistons are 11.7cc dome pistons and he was concerned about plug clearance. The pistons are shaped for plug clearance and the other guy at the shop said they checked everything and I could run projected or non. I told the owner I had bought BR6ES non projected so should have plenty of clearance. He then said something along the lines of I should run an 8 range plug instead of the 6 for road course work. I always thought plug heat range coincided with how much HP you made and how much heat the plug needed to handle, basically speaking. So the owner suggesting an 8 range plug for a road course engine confused me, but I am 100% positive he has forgotten more about LS engines than I know.

821 heads, 11.25-ish compression, MAYBE 450hp...

What say yall? Stick with my BR6ES or go to a BR8ES? Or try both and see what works better?

I always say to trust your builder. Go with the 8. Check the plugs after a session. If your AFR’s are in check, and the plugs look darker than you feel they should, consider a 7 next outing…rinse and repeat with a 6 if you don’t like the way the 7’s look…but start where he says to start.
Basically, a plugs heat range is the ability for the plug to clean itself…generally speaking. 450hp in theory should have zero issues with a 6…or heck maybe even a 5…but trust your builder.

Thats kind of what he was talking about, but it was something I didnt really understand. He said "oh it'll run on the 6's, but they will be really dirty, where an 8 will stay nice and clean".

He was talking about Nascar running 10 heat range even though they are only in the 600hp range.

I run an LS3 road race engine making ~650 HP. I use NGK TR6 4177 plugs in it and they always look good when I pull them.

yea all my research was saying to run a 6 in my application vs. a "stock" 55...

So like I said the info I was given yesterday to run an 8 was not something I was expecting.

I need to snag a TR6 and see what the electrode protrusion is vs. the BR6 I have to see if I can run the projected tip vs. non projected. I have read that a projected tip(TR6) is possibly "better" than a non projected(BR6) as far as burn goes. I mean were probably talking .2 difference in electrode positioning here so nothing crazy.

There's a pretty decent pocket in the piston for plug clearance.

I too run TR6's in my 600 whp 418 LS3 at the road course and they look fine each time. 11.8:1 compression. Can stick some putty in there and spin the engine over by hand with a plug in to see your clearance.
