Default Gen V Engine

OK guys serious question here. What improvements would you like to see GM make with the upcoming Gen V engines? Remember this is a mass produced engine platform so building them all with titanium rods and forged pistons may not be too realistic.

Its priority main oiling feeds the crankshaft first and top–end last.

Direct Port Injection, Enhanced DOD / VVT, and E85 on all versions (who doesn't want 100 octain ethy for daily driving).

Question:
When a Gen IV is in Displacement on Demand Mode (run'n on 4) does the computer adjust for the reading the O2 sensor is going to show?
Cause a 15% increase just doesn't sound right for killing half the cylinders, unless the 4 active cylinders are being run very rich to accomodate the extremely lean settings the computer would see from the O2's....

Question 2:
If you they went E85 only could they toss the cats?

Vehicles that run on E85 are "flex fuel" vehicles. This means that they will run on pure gas, E10, or E85 with no input from the driver. The computer tells the injectors how much fuel to flow based upon which fuel is in the tank. So I don't see how you could get rid of the cats unless you made it e85 only.

So VVT, E85, direct injection, oiling... What else.

How bought this, no throttle body, direct injection, solenoid valvetrain like on F1 cars (NO CAMSHAFTS!!!!!), both wet and dry sump models, then how bought this for a dream!!!!

32 valves with 16 intake ports and 16 exhaust ports. You could have "systems" per cylinder. 1 to take care of low speed and the other to take care of high speed. Maybe they could work together like an ac motor does and just keep the waves pulsing into the engine for maximum filling everywhere.

Hum, sounds like GM should hire me for advance designs!!!

do they????? what about valve springs???? i thought they ran air valves? i know it was band a few years ago but how can you get a conventional valve train to rev to 20,000????? not even 600cc bikes run that high!!!

as for the engine.....get rid of the liners and run the coating that bikes run (can't remember name). use magnesium alloy (i think) for the block and heads as it lighter (like BMW is doing on it 6pot)......anything else?

Chris.

Lightweight, full roller rockers. Stronger rod and main bolts.

DOD deactivates both valves and the injectors in the affected cylinders, so there is no effect on O2 sensors, just more exhaust per cylinder from the remaining 4, as they work harder and more efficiently.
Also, E85 is really no better for emissions (stories to the contrary notwithstanding) than gasoline. Different concerns, but no better overall.

I'd like to see what they can do with some DOHC action and VVT (even though this is starting to sprout up already). *flame suit on* It would definitely be interesting. If they can do what they do with an "old-fashioned" pushrod set-up...man oh man...

Stronger pistons if not rods as well.

well MB has got a 6.3 coming out and don't think the dimansions would be that much bigger than a LSx engine! would they????

also how about a V10??????? now that could be very nice!!!

As others have mentioned, electromagnetic valves.

With the proper programming, you could have the perfect valve timing for ANY combination of load, throttle setting, and RPM.

As someone else said just use forged pistons and better rods, i mean it could only raise the vehicle price by max $1000, and im sure most people buying a high performance engine would pay the extra money for forged internals, I know I would. Other than I think they could keep the gen IV engine pretty much the same. Could you imagine a forged 402 ls2 stock in a c6 vette from the factory? That would be sick...and i dont think it would be too unrealistic, or at least offer it as a factory option maybe?

Forged pistons + GM = Lawsuits!!!!
They have already had this problem. And it wasn't even with forged pistons. Remember the piston slap of the LS1's. Yeah, that cost GM some money. The people driving thevehicles complained of noise from the engine, GM told the dealerships it was normal, customers, knowing more than the engineers, decided it wasn't. Therefore, GM got the bad end of that deal.

I think the only thing they can do to handle the power levels is to have piston squirters like they do on the Ecotec 2.0L supercharged engines. This will allow the piston to handle more heat by cooling the backside of the piston.

Are forged pistons really that noisy? I have a couple buddies with 03-04 cobras and their engines dont make anymore valvetrain than a stock gt (minus the blower whine lol). I thought the piston slap was due more to the fact that when cold the piston had room in betweent he cylinder walls and caused the slapping noise until the cylinder walls warmed up so how would that neccessarily have anything to do with the forged pistons? I mean I have heard ZERO piston slap in my buddies cobras and your basically saying that with forged pistons there will inherently be piston slap? I dunno I just dont think thats the case. In addition i havent heard of any cases of LS2's having piston slap (yet at least) so I wouldnt jump to the conclusion that forged pistons would be bad to put in a factory motor. However I do agree with the piston squirters, that would def be a sweet addition to a gen V motor.
