Default Ls2 vs L92

With all the new parts coming out from GM lately there are lots more options for building high hp LSXs. I asked this in another thread last week and didnt get any response so I'll try again here. If you were to build a ~402-412 inch LSx stroker with aftermarket heads, which block is the better starting point? LS2 or L92? Aftermarket heads, crank, rods, pistons ect, what difference will it make using the LS2 or L92 block? The L92 is not sleeved where the LS2 is right?

would love to hear what everybody thinks

Thanks
Pat

Pat,
The L92 block will make 415 CID with a 4.00" Stroke where the LS2 will Make 402 CID with the same stroker crank. You wouldn't have to do any machining on either one. The L92 is set up for displacement on demand, but you don't have to use that feature and the block would work just fine. The parts cost should run approximately the same once shelf pistons are available for the 4.065" bore of the L92 with a typical short compression height for the 4.00" stroke. You could build the LS2 right now. You probably would need to wait 6 months realistically to build the L92.

If it were me and my money, I'd wait and go with the L92 assuming the block cost is in the same ball park as the LS2.

Displacement on demand is not something I'm really concerned with on a high performance build. Is one block stronger than the other or any inherent advantages besides the extra cubes of the L92 over the LS2?

With the 4.065" bore of the L92, you are in theory just barely above the minimum bore to use stock LS7 heads with the stock sized valves (2.20" intake), which means you can also use the LS7 intake manifold. I haven't heard of anyone doing that yet, but based on flow numbers for the heads and intake, it ought to be a really good combo.

So, 6 months is realistic before I can have a L92-based stroker built? That'll work nicely in my financial timeline.

Six months is just a guess on my part. However, I would imagine that before SEMA 2006 there will be several vendors selling L92 based stroker motors. I'm sure that GM will want to sell heads and blocks assuming that they can keep up with production demand.
