Default LS2 worth the extra, how strong are they?

I am doing a FD swap soon and I am trying to decide if the LS2 is worth the extra $$$. I was told that the LS2 aluminum block is much stronger than the LS1. I was told that I could run some good aftermarket forged rods and pistons in a otherwise stock LS2 block and be good to 850hp. Is this true cause I know the LS1 aluminums are only good to 600hp or so. I am hoping for over 600hp and I dont want to go iron so hopefully a aluminum ls2 will do it. Thanks

LS2 will work just fine...improper tuning is your enemy!

I am mostly just worried about the block handleing the power. Right now I am trying to decide if I want to keep small cubes and slap a turbo on or go over 400ci and just all motor. So the LS2 block is much stronger than the ls1 block correct.

Noyzee was spraying a 300 shot off the line with his forged bottom end 347. I think he was making around 750 at the wheels and it didn't miss a beat. I wouldn't worry about beating the hell out of a LS1 block until you're approaching 900rwhp.

ls2 block has siamesed cylinder walls so is stiffer with less distortion of cylinder sleeves when torquing heads on.

We have made 800 rwhp with the LS6 blocks, over 700 rwhp with the LS1 blocks. A bottom end girdle helps to keep them together. The LS2 block is indeed stronger though, and is certainly a great starting point. Bob

there are several turbo guys going into 4digit power numbers with the LS1 block.
you dont need to worry about breaking either block.. thats not the weakpoint.

Now is that a ls1 or ls2. I know ls1's and 6-speed go for around $4,000. How much is a LS2 and 6-speed?

a stock LS2 pulled out of a C6 can be picked up on the corvette forums for $2800 long block, fully assembled $4500-$4800. xtreme in arizona was selling them and fred bean's was selling them new as crate motors for $48xx.00. LS2 has 6 bolt main so that is also a strong point. im going to be running a LS2 403 + 200 shot. there are many options with the LS2's, i cant think of the name of the shop that is doing this but 4.030 bore + 4.125 crank, getting 418ci out of it. putting down well over 500whp with heads and supporting mods. he said they stressed tested the walls and they are strong enough to bore .030 over.

4.03" bore + 4.125" stroke is a 421.

I am loving the 6 bolt mains of the LS2 is a Ls1 4 bolt mains. If I could get a LS2 and 6-speed for Under $7,500 I will go that route. Thanks

Now that I think about it if I can get a complete motor for around $4,800 then I could get a 6-speed for $1,300. That would be well less then $7,500 so I would have to do it.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again, no one has blown a stock LS1 from power alone...yet. Its all been oil/fuel/tuning related.
