Default Any Gen 3/4 engine schools around

I have been wanting to build an LS engine now for the past several years but never had the money to do so. I am now getting to where I have money but lacking the main ingredient, knowledge. I was wondering if there are any schools/colleges that teach engine building preferable on the eastern half of the US, because I live in Kentucky.

I am new to this forum and have been reading your info for the past several months, but this is my first post. I have seen a couple post about SAMS but I was kinda looking for something closer.

I really want it to be taught over the LS series, more specificly the new LS2, 7, and the L92. I really dont care about the older SBC or BBC, and especially not Ford or Dodge. I have the Chevy LS1/6 from Will Handzel and it has a lot of good info, but im more of a hands on person.

Honestly if all you want to learn about is the LS series, then you should probably get several good books and teach yourself. Go to your local Chevy dealer and ask if they have any cores that are not being returned. You can take apart a junk engine and get familiar with it.

I am somewhat fimiliar with them and have taken the heads off one but was looking for knowledge to modify and tune, and one day learn how to port heads and so on, I was just wanting to learn on the LS series engine instead of a piece a crap that has been laying around for years. Maybe I limited my self to far. I am sure knowledge from current and past engines, as well as, other brands would be helpful, but im only interested in these.

I would also prefer someone to show and teach me instead of read, but I do enjoy learning from whatever i can. Also what good books do you prefer?

To be successful at engine building for any series or make, you must learn the fundamentals, and the fundamentals are same for all engines. What you learn on an old piece of crap engine, you can apply to an LS. A/F mixture, compression, rotating geometry, is all the same, engine to engine.

Everything I learned was from this and several other sites as well as trial and error, taking apart and building engines, and Will's book, etc. I'm still learning. The guys here are a great resource. I agree with the above. You don't need to be so engine specific. What you learn from a SBC can be valuable in working on an LS engine.

Close to Ashland, the tri-state area with WV, and OH, but throughout the week I work in Lexington.

Anyways, are there some sort of school like the sam around here?

Exactly as stated above the principles of what it takes for make an engine function correctly, proper blueprinting process, prep process, etc. That will apply to every engine regardless of make or model.

i know that some of the UTI schools teach some Gen3 stuff, and there is a UTI in Pennsylvania... the only problem is that if you're not interested in learning about other stuff you're going to have to sit through alot of it to get to the fun stuff.

but i do agree with 'goat cheese', learning about the fundimentals will go a long way in helping you learn about LSx motors... for instance... the guy that taught me about porting heads (now works for RCR) taught me on a honda vtec head and alittle on a chevy small block head, but the ideas are basically the same on the set of LS1 heads that i'm working on now

I will have to check out UTI. I agree that i need to understand the fundamentals but i just have no interest in the others. Also does anyone know if SAMS or UTI teaches the tuning aspect or is that another school. I just bought hp tuners a month or so ago and just started trying to teach myself that.

Thanks for all the info everyone
