Quick ls7 questions
Does the wet sump system found in an ls1 fit the ls7 ?

If you are planning on retrofitting a LS7 based motor into an older LS1's location then using an aftermarket LS1 style crank with a 24x timing wheel will be easier then trying to modify the vehicle to handle 58x timing wheel and dry sump setup.
Just some thoughts for you.
LS7 block (I think the price has come down to right around $2100 for a bare block).
Your choice of 4" LS1 crank, rods, and pistons.
top end A
You can go with LS1 style 15degree dish'd piston (say if you have a set of ETP or AFR heads for an LS1/LS6). This piston would go along with a LS1 top end (heads, manifold, cam, valvetrain etc).
top end B
Or you could go with a set of 12 degree pistons designed for the LS7 heads. Then use a LS7 top end with the Holley LS2/LS7 90mm TB and bracket. You will need a cam designed for the LS7 though.
You would also need a LS1 to LS2 conversion kit (timing sensor extensions, external knock sensors, and all the other goodies... talk to the guys at Katech or SDPC for this).
This would give you a wet sump capabale 427 that would use you LSx style oil pan and mount up into your engine bay, hook up to your ECM. And after a reprogram/major tune should run....
If you have alot of high end LS1 style goodies (say heads, high end manifold, etc) then going with the ls1 style 427 would be a more cost effective choice.
Note: this choice calls for reusing components that you have already purchased and you should have the items checked out for wear before installing on a new motor (ie make sure there are no stress cracks or warps in old parts, it would help in reducing headach's in the build).
If you go with the LS7 wetsump idea you will have a mostly new motor (depend in if you reuse the stock oil pan and pulleys).
The third choice is to go with the L92 shortblocks that are coming out as your looking at 414 to 418 cubes. Yeah thats 9 to 13 cubes less then a LS7 for around $1200 less on a shortblock LS7.
Just look at the SDPC (or LME) LS7 shortblock with LS1 style crank (wet sump and 24x timing wheel) -vs- there L92 shortblock.
If now, then what block(ls2 ? maybe) can you easely bolt into an ls1 car and retain your heads and manifold?
I'm talking about stock bottom ends not built motors.
Your best bet right now would be to contact SDPC as they recently drop'd the price of the LS7 wetsump shortblock to around $5500. Price will be going up in 07 (I think BG said a little over $5600 in 07).
That shortblock is a LS7 block, eagle 4in crank (should be 24x timing gear), scat rods and Mahley pistons. The shortblock comes with LS7 pistons (as in the dish's are designed for the 12 degree head). Have them build you the same shortblock with a set of pistons designed for the LS1 style heads (ie 15 degree) and put your topend onto it.
All of the mount points and accessory points are in the same location on the ls1,ls2,l92, and ls7 blocks.
I think Brian even stated the only thing that they need to do is tap the LS7 block for a dipstick (which they do for the shortblock).
Check with SDPC or PM Brian for more information. List what you want to keep and what your going to do and he should be able to give you a list of what your going to need for your conversion and probably price quote as well.
