Default more cam questions

for a ls7

just out of sheer stupidity, why is the katech stage III cam not a streetable cam? 258/258 would that be bad to tune at idle i'm guessing? i know it would lope like crazy, but nothing wrong with that.

someone says i should try to get the lift into the .600 to .650 range.
doesn't the cam contol this also? i am trying to learn as i go.

my car is basically done anyway, i'm just trying to learn what exactly i have, and how to improve on what i've got.

Hi Rob,

It would be easier for everyone to answer your question if you listed the specifics on your car set up i.e. engine displacement, what heads you have, were they ported, do you have auto or manual transmission, if it's an auto what torque converter you have, what exhaust you have, what is the ratio of your ring & pinion, what is the specs on your cam (Lift, duration and lobe separation angle) and then most importantly what is the goal of your car. Are you going to use your car strictly for the drag strip, Will you drive it on the street and strip every once in a while, will this be a weekend car to be driven only in good weather or is this a daily driver that will be your prime means of transportation? If you’re unsure of the specifics then just state that that item hasn't been modified. If you're just putting this question out there as hypothetical then state this too.

ls7
ls7 heads/cam/heads not ported
m6
stainless works 1 7/8
3:73 gear
not exact on specs on cam i have, that's where the question is.
why would say a katech torquer cam be a better street cam than the trac III cam?

not a daily driver. hardly ever strip, but i defianately like to play hard on the street.
occasional trip to beach or mountains.
i don't have an exact goal per say, just hate to leave potential on the table.
550 rwhp is fine but if a cam can gain me 40 more rwhp why would i NOT put the other cam in the car?
does that make sense? has to be other people out there with the same question.
for example someone said the trac III cam 258/258 would be a bad street application cam.
just curious,
rob

Default LS7 Cam

Why not just use Katech's LS7 specific cam?

Do a search on Katech and you'll find a test that shows dyno results and discusses it's streetability.

i've already talked to jason. he was awesome, answered most of my questions.
my engine is already done and in final stages of tune.

my question is why would a cam with a 258/258 be a bad street cam?
is it hard to tune at idle? what makes it a worse cam than a smaller one like the torquer cam for the street?

Default cam

here is a quote from jason on the cam mentioned
Yes, I wouldn't recommend the stage 3 for a street car
now with this said. if i can get lets say 40 more rwhp from above cam over a smaller cam, but this is a street car, why wouldn't you do it?

is it harder on the car? just hard to tune?
just trying to educate myself my brother.
