Default Coolant leak question

Just put engine back into car. I put ls6 cam in a 98 ls1. I used all new gaskets. I used the steel GM head gaskets with new bolts and torqued them to the GM specs. I now have a coolant leak from the head gaskets. Both sides in the exact same spot. The leak seams to be coming from the outer edge of the head gasket. Has anyone run into this before? Are the steel gaskets not able to work on a 98 block? Any help or info would be appreciated.

thanks

Did you check if the head sufaces were smooth before you put them back on. Maybe they had slight warpage I was told to definitely get mine checked when I changed my gaskets, and sure enough they BOTH needed to be done. Get the Cometic gaskets.

I might be thinking of the wrong thing, but if I remember correctly, weren't the 98 heads unique (driver vs. passenger) side? If not, Sorry but that keeps popping in my head for some reason. Just kinda strange that both would be leaking in the same spot.

I believe you're right. the 98 heads have a notch that has to be welded to use the newer gaskets.

Yep, you used "no notch" gaskets on a "notched" head/block. You need 98' model specific gaskets, not the newer MLS's.

Default lesson learned

Thanks for your help. That is what I did. Didn't do enough reasearch befor the head gaskets. Got some 241 casting heads gonna put them on with the mls gaskets. Expensive mistake. LESSON LEARNED
