If that motor comes out..It wont go back in.
I pretty much accounted for all the pieces from the errant retainer.(I kept them)
The Comp R stayed together as long as the pushrod was in place, but fell apart as I removed it.
I have the filter..I'll cut it open..Along with the one that just came off the car prior to it breaking this time.
I've kept a quart of the oil that I just drained & I'm having it analyzed professionally.
That will tell me the state of the bearings.
For all I know my lifter bore could be completly hammered & will have to change the engine anyway.I'll know more tomorrow afternoon when the head comes off.
Fingers crossed..

Well..This is where I eat a big slice of humble pie.
The good news is my lifters are fine.
The bad news is the same can't be said about the #1 rod bearing. She appears to have spun.
The noise was the sound of the piston hitting the combustion chamber pad.
The reason the noise stopped when the rocker arms were removed was because the valves were closed & not letting the cylinder breathe.
So I hope this thread will help others out when chasing down a problem.
I'm also glad I didn't shoot my mouth off about TSP in the public forums.
Hopefully I didn't burn any bridges, because I need a new engine.

Well that would explain the loss of oil pressure. Sorry to hear that you spun a bearing. If you rebuild, be sure to regrind the crank, and resize the rods and replace the rod bolts with some higher grade bolts if those are stock rods and bolts. Don't just stick in another set of bearings. I've seen people do that before, and it doesn't work. You probably stretched the rod bolt to nearly breaking, which cause the bearing to spin. It could have been a lot worst.
Good luck on the next motor. Sounds like you are due for some good luck.

Thanks man..
I can tell you a thing or two about rod bolt failure. The original engine was destroyed at 90K after #7 rod bolts failed in a spectacular fashion.
The engine that just spun a rod bearing is equipped with the improved GM design. It will rebuilt & sold. but the next time this car sees the road, it will be powered by something else.

I am strongly considering doing something old-school & building my own engine.
That way I can put my own name on the side of the car instead of that "Lingenfelter" (RIP) fellow.
I'm going to call TSP tomorrow & see if we can throw some parts together.
Comp Star bottom end with a set of Diamond pistons in a brand new LS6 block.
I'd still like to get the old motor fixed to either sell or keep as a "spare".
It seems at the rate I break **** on that car a spare might not be a bad idea.
