Default 416 into 92 Z-28

looking for some help and suggestions.

I ordered the 416 from the SDPC sale https://ls1tech.com/forums/sponsor-sales-specials/773476-sdpc-inventory-clearance-sale.html and will be putting it into my Z-28.

This will be a street car w/handling and overall performance. I already have sub frame connectors, Bilsteins, Herb Adam sway bars, Edelbrock strut tower brace, etc.

I want to retain the strut tower brace, and will most likely be using Hawk's 1 3/4" headers. I want to retain the stock hood so no real high rise.

I want to go 6-speed but awating poss. surgery on right arm and foot so...

Looking for head, intake, cam, and other suggestions to achieve this with 800-900 rpm idle.

Going Carb or EFI?

Carb will be cheaper and easier (I have a 92 Firebird and am putting either a carbed SBC or LS1 in there).

If carb, I'd just pick up assembled L92 heads and the GMPP L92 carb intake. That'd be cheap and easy way to make nice power. As far as cam, a Comp XE-R 232/240 112 would work well for a nice clean powerband with a good idle/vacuum. The Hawks/SW headers look to be good to support 475-500rwhp, and with that topend and cam, you'll be in that range.

For a carb, I'd go with a Mighty Demon 825CFM (4150-type). It's very nice and easy to tune. Then just add the MSD LS-series coils, spark plugs, and ignition controller and whatever fuel system you want and you're good to go.

Jake,

Appreciate the feedback but I need to pass smog and would like to keep in EFI. I know it will take a bit more but I may have lots of time on my hands.

From other sources I had been advised to try and sources 1 3/4 to 1 7/8" headers but will stay with the 1 3/4" Hawks.

The L92 heads are leading in my mind at this point, I have a few other aftermarket suggestions but to support 500/500 range hp/torques I think the L92s, maybe ported, should support that goal.

My 416ci L92 stroker from LME idles nicely at 900rpms and makes my old nitrous/forged 346 seem like a 4cyl. 20in of vacuum at idle and the throttle response everywhere is great. Ported L92 heads and a 240ish/250ish cam on 112.

If EFI, you can go with a larger cam, but because of smog, I'd probably try something like a Comp XE-R 224/230 115. XE-R lobes are faster off the seat, so they'll idle better and have less overlap at .006" for a given .050" duration, which will help.

Livernois and TSP have ported L92s. I'm not sure they're worth more than say 10rwhp (even Greg Good ported L92s only seem to be worth that), so I'd consider saving my money and just go with some assembled L92s from a place like Scoggin Dickey with upgraded valve springs.

Also, can you can pass smog with an engine swap, even if the engine itself is clean?

Gentlemen,

Appreciate the replies. Looking like L92 heads and intake assembly from SDPC is the best route for my goals.

Ordered it as a long block w/ cam, etc. Cam is one step down from their dyno'd 427 (4.1" stroke L92). According to Brian the idle was still good so here's hoping.
