I am preparing to install a cam in a 2005 GTO LS2 motor. I removed the timing chain cover to take a look….another thread raised some curiosity as to whether I had 1 bolt or 3 bolts holding on the cam gear. Anyway, I noticed I cannot see the crankshaft gear to align the dots for the pending cam install. There is a black plastic like piece below the cam gear and above the crankshaft gear. It also sits behind the oil pump and is bounded on the sides by the timing chain.

The black piece is held on by 2 bolts.

Do I need to remove the oil pump and black piece to align the new cam or is there some other method?
