Removing Valve Cover

So tommorrow Ill be taking the valve covers off due to a ticking sound my car just picked up...can you guys give me any tips for what to check and how to check it thanks...

Can you start the car with the valve covers off?

First check each pushrod for any looseness. The valve should be closed when you check. If you find one that rattles, take the rocker arm off and inspect it. If the rocker looks good, then the lifter may be collapsed. If none of the pushrods appear loose, then I would next remove each pushrod and check for straightness. You can do this by rolling them on a flat smooth surface, such as glass.

You can start the car without the valve covers briefly, but be advised that oil is going to go all over the place, since there is no valve cover to deflect it back.
