Default Melling Oil Pump & Double Roller in an LS2

Ok, so, here's my thread on LS1GTO if anyone wants to check it out. It's brief: http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=236044

Basically, I have the Melling HV/HP pump, JP double roller chain, and an LS2. I'd like them to all work peacably, but apparently I'm trying to get Israel to play nicely with all their enemies, I mean that's what it feels like.

Quick recap:

If I use the supplied spacers for the pump, the rear of the pump clears the chain with flying colors. I can put like 2 credit cards between the chain and the rear of the pump. However, the front cover tells me where to shove the broomstick.

If I take the spacers out, there's no chance in hell of fitting the pump in there short of boring a hole through the pump--like, not just milling some metal off.

As a test, I took the bolts out of the front of the pump so it was pretty much flat. I lay the pump inside the front cover. It lays flush inside the cover, with the rear mounting point of the pump (the flat area which includes the output orifice) being perfectly even with the back of the timing cover. Eg, I could lay a straight egde across the back and the back of the pump is dead even with the back of the timing cover. The 'outer edges' of the pump clear the inner circular portion of the timing cover, no need to mill anything away except a spot for the bolts which go into the front of the pump. That tells me the pump fills up the entire space within the timing cover, and would fit fine with a single chain. My stock pump wasn't much better, it gave me maybe 1/32nd of an inch of extra clearance.

In fact, I measured the Melling and the stocker together because everyone's mother says the Melling is "much larger" than the stocker. Yeah, try less than 1/32nd of an inch of difference, if at all. I mean, probably one of my hairs fell in between the caliper and the pump. As far as I can tell, they're the same thickness, they just have different "looking" flashing on the outside.

With that being said, the spacers add over 1/8th of an inch. There's no physical way that darn thing can fit in there, even with milling. Even with the gasket in place, I still have more than 1/16th of an inch gap between the gasket and the motor. Yet, there's people I know who have literally just bolted this exact setup together without issue, and others say you need to mill the back of the pump down a smidge because the spacers aren't enough.

I found out what the pump is bottoming out on too, it's in the pic in the LS1 thread I linked above, post #5, the magenta area is where the Melling's pump face is slamming into when I try to put the cover on. I can't mill that away because it's so thin as it is and it backs the front seal. Also, I can't mill the front of the melling pump face either as the protrusions are actually the oil passages.. Unlike most people, my pump isn't bottoming out on the outer edges of the pump. My pump's "face" is bottoming out on the front-seal thingy in the timing cover.

Ok, so now that you're thoroughly confused, what are my options? I need a double roller, and I need a higher volume/pressure pump than stock. If I can't get the stocker to fit, the SLP won't fit either unless it's magically smaller. Should I have the spacers milled in half, and then grind a ton of metal from the rear of the pump in the hopes it works?

At a loss here, need a solution this weekend.

There are many examples of this issue, here's a link to one. Try searching with the terms, "melling double roller cover".

Here's one with your same issue: https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...g+double+cover

I appreciate the reply, but I already saw that thread and that is not my same issue. He's having issues with the chain clearing the pump as well as the pump hitting the cover on the outer edges.

My situation: the chain clears the pump with like a credit-card or two thickness of space, and the flat-front portion of my pump is smashing up against the front-seal pocket.

Look at the first picture in this post: https://ls1tech.com/forums/showpost....61&postcount=6
He had to machine down the red area on the pump to get it to fit.

I'm running a meiling HV pump, cloyes double chain on a ls2 setup. You will have to mill prolly .040 off the front of the meiling cover, shave a lil off the bolts, mill around the pickup tube for the chain and grind the part number off the back of the pump so the chain won't hit it. There is a few places on the cover that needs some love also. The area where the sensor bolts to the cover sticks out and will hit the chain. Grind it down till you expose the bolt hole and it will clear fine. Just use sealant on the bolt to make sure it doesn't leak. You will also have to clearance the cover a lil where the pickup mets it on the bottom. It is a pain in the ***, but the meiling pump is a really nice pump and it is worth it in the end.

Mill the ribs off of the face of the pump. You will still need to clearance the inside of the front cover slightly to clear the ribs on the pump body.

We do this all the time. It is a little work but not difficult.

Thanks,
Shane
