The pilot hole depth on the K1 crankshaft is shallow, I just had a short built with one in it and it can not mate up my T56 on my F-Body. I spoke with K1 and apparantly the design was modeled off an auto car, and they are working on fixing it on the new cranks. The recomended fix is grinding the input shaft of the tranny (upto ~0.150" depending on the plug they put in the crank - these vary too.). The rep said the plug could also be drilled if the intreference was not too deep.

As stated above, the early cranks we produced were made to fit cars with an automatic transmission. While some could be mated to a manual transmission by removing approximately .020” from the end of the input shaft, we have made modifications to our design and all cranks currently being shipped will work with either type of transmission.

I don't mean to bag on K1, just curious why wouldn't have this been a good idea to do from the start?

I know in my business the more applications a single product works with the better.

Never heard of a K1 crankshaft - Is this a good product? I am thinking of purchasing one for my Race Boat and Cigarette. I am running 800HP and 700 HP on the Cig. Looking for a 4.375 build on a 807 casting Bowtie 10.2 tall deck.

So....the K1 crank was modeled off an A4 car. What's the difference between a crank in an A4 car and the crank in an M6 car? I'm guessing nothing other than one comes with a pilot bearing. Why wouldn't the flange and the rear of the crank be modeled off a stock LS1 crank rather than the front of whatever transmission might be used with it? It would seem like the obvious approach so that you know either transmission will work. ?

 

K1 Industries have been around awhile now. They are now a division of Carrillo and could be compared to Compstar as far as quality goes.

Yep, as an update. Dover (PMI) sold Carrillo a few weeks ago and kept K1...along with JE and Wiseco.

 

Crazy changes lol.... Apparently alot has happend since the SEMA show.
