It really does not matter where it goes other than the pulley is more secure if pinned. The crank sensor fires off the reluctor.

Um, I just bought an ATI balancer, and pulled my old balancer off. I am supposed to have a 383 with an eagle 4 inch crank. I looked at my crank, and I dont have a freaking key way... When I bought the eagle 4 inch crank, I could swear to GOD, it had a key way in it. There are numbers on the nose which state 417. I dont know what that means. I really hope I have a forge crank in my car, because I swear I had a key way... Seeing this post, do eagle stoked cranks come with a key way? Also, my bill states, eagle stroker crank, because they had to machine the pistons to fit. Again, I swear when I bought the damn thing, it had a key way. Any help here, will be appreciated.

ah... That is right, damn, I thought I had a key all this time. I thought I seen it, but that for the pump. I would have not gone with eagle then. They should have included it.. Thanks man, I was very nervous, that the machine shop messed up... I just have to pin it..

Be sure to tighten your damper to spec,NOT just tight as you can get it. If the bolt manufacture (ARP) says 235 then tighten it to 235. Without a woddruf key the damper can spin/move on the crank if it's not brutally tight and you have any kind of "power. You almost certainly have to drop the starter and use a flywheel lock to do this if your motor is in the car. If you're on a build stand then there are other ways to lock the crank up.

Pinning it would be the wise thing to do.
