L84/TKX swap

Default L84/TKX swap

I am swapping a 5.3 L84 and TKX into a 1971 Lemans Sport convertible. The car previously had a 440 Pontiac and Muncie M22Z combo before that did not get good enough mileage for its power level. The L84 is machined for a manual, something I am told earlier 5.3's are not. The TKX supposedly the same input dimensions as Muncies, Saginaws, ST-10's and the rest.

First thing off the bell housing did not completely engage, leaving a 0.050" gap at the top. Mnnh.

Removing the housing showed the some bolt heads were impacting.



Not good.

I would have expected Lakewood or Holley to catch an error like this. A minute of the Bridgeport fixed the issue.




Next up the starter ring gear was too close for comfort - the mill was once again called into service.



Next up will be mounting the flywheel and checking bell housing runout and clearance.

That does seem really odd that you would have to modify it like that.

That is what I thought.

Perhaps the 6.2's have a different set up back there; no 5.3 manuals in the wild that I know of.

True, but if Lakewood specifically marketing it for all LT swaps it should fit without the need for clearancing. What manual was this in? GM authority lists the vehicles it came on, and they're all automatics?

so when you said "the L84 is machined for a manual" what did you mean? (sorry if misinterpreted)

The crankshaft will accept a pilot bearing. Some cranks are auto only.
