Default Hello LS Nerds!!

I'm Josh, nice to meet all of you, I hail from South Dakota, but currently due to my current employer (Air Force) I am stationed in good ole South Carolina. I've been Active Duty for just over 10 years now as a Munition Systems Technician i.e. I assemble and test stuff that blows up like missiles.. lots of stories to be told lol. Just wanted to drop a quick hello. I'm a little new to the LS motors but no stranger to Mechanics and everything involved with that.

I'm beating a dead horse (literally) but I am swapping the infamous 5.3 truck motor into a SN95 platform for a weekend toy/strip fun car.. I will be starting a build thread shortly. So far the motor has been re-ringed and cleaned up.. a healthy BTR cam put in with springs. It's gonna be a slow build, but I will get it done. Thanks hope to converse with you all soon!!!

Thanks for your service OP. Regarding your 5.3 swap, just an option since your current 5.3 needs re-ringed and honed at the moment. The 5.3L motors (3.78" factory bore) can be bored to 3.9" (LS1 bore ) to make it 5.7L. The larger bore will help you utilize larger factory sized 2.00" int. / 1.55" exh. valves (factory 5.3L valves are 1.89" int. / 1.55" exh. for 706 & 862 head casting numbers), which is much more ideal if you plan on doing any work to the heads or swap heads down the road. Boring the motor while it's already apart and getting worked on would be a very inexpensive option now to open up more potential for the engine down the road. Thanks again and best of luck.

FYI, depending on which 5.3L engine you have, 5.3's came with a few different heads. Head casting numbers are 706, 862 and 799. The 706 and 862 heads have the smaller 1.78" intake valve. The 799 head came with a larger 2.00" intake valve and flow much more cfm, and is just a much better head all around. The 799 and 243 casting cylinder heads are essential the best flowing cathedral port factory head GM made.
Do you know which heads your 5.3 has now?

I have 862 heads that have already been refreshed with new valves..the motor is actually almost done lol...I meant start a build thread to catch up to where I’m at now. I do appreciate the info though..the more knowledge the better. I am looking around locally for some 243 heads but I have a hook up at GPI and plan on running their heads down the road.

I see. Now that I re-read your post, you said the motor "has been" re-ringed and cleaned up. Sorry about that. Sometimes 243 heads can be difficult to come by, on the budget side, a good porting and valve job on 862 heads are very close in performance to the same work done on 243/799 heads.
