Long time reader, first time poster
I have a LS1 swapped 1999 Miata I built that I use primarily for road racing and track days.
Though I call it a 'Miata', there is not much Miata left in the Miata. The tub, doors (which have been modified), rear subframe (also modified), dash board (modified) and gas tank are about all that is left of the Mazda construction. I did all of the work, except installation of the roll cage (happily paid someone to do that huge PIA job for me) and engine rebuild (also happily paid for that since I have built enough engines already).
Mod list:
- Stock setup LS1 (not modded due to class power limitations), rebuilt with Mahle forged flat top pistons, about 10:1 compression. Makes ~325 rwhp (dyno tested and tuned, HPTuners)
- F-Body T-56 with faceplated gears a-la Liberty's gears, flat shift enabled in HPTuners (fast upshifts)
- ATP 6-puck sprung clutch assy with lightweight flywheel
- Completely gutted tub, full roll cage, all new wiring harness
- Kirkey Halo racing seat and 6-pt harness
- Aluminum Ford 8.8 IRS, Allison Truetrac 31-spline differential, 3.55 gears, custom direct subframe mount (done by me), Driveshaft Shop custom axles
- Sanderson shorty headers with v-band mod (by me, because 3-bolt flanges suck compared to v-bands)
- 2.5" downpipes, merged into 3.5" single exhaust, 3.5" inlet/outlet Spintech muffler, side exit exhaust
- V8 Roadsters tubular suspension with their Daytona shock set
- SP Parts rear upper adjustable link
- Wilwood 4-piston brakes all around, Wilwood two-piece rotors in front, Miata sport brakes in rear, driver adjustable proportioning valve
- More and more and more and more...
I am about to return this car to street duty, leaving all of the racing parts in place and reintroducing some of the creature comforts, like insulated floors. I am also going to install a mild boost turbo setup in a novel manner that will be revealed once it is complete.

It is hard to describe how quick and fast it is on a road course. With the big sticky Hoosier A7 tires, the fully independent suspension, the Truetrac differential, the dogshift T56, the Wilwood brakes, and the aero add ons, it does well. In all modesty I have beat up some expensive track prepped Vipers and Corvettes, and have the trophies to prove it. When I take people for rides around the track, they are wide eyed when they get out of the car.
It has done 148 MPH on the back straight at Circuit of the Americas (20 Hz GPS measured) and is rock stable doing it, like no big deal, that is until it is time to brake for turn 12
