Make sure the 5.3 your looking at, or whatever engine you go with, has a 24 tooth reluctor wheel. This wheel tells ECM when to fire ignition and injection. Very important here.
You’ll need to exchange oil pans and oil pump pickups…possibly windage trays….if the LS1 pickup doesn’t work with the 5.3 windage tray. The oil pans have to be aligned at the rear, because they area structural member, and the bellhousing bolts to the pan at the bottom, same as it bolts to the block at the top. Pan alignment must be correct or you’ll have input shaft alignment issues. Use a straight edge to align the pan, or a bellhousing will work even better if you have one loose that you can snug up to the block before final torquing the pan bolts.
You also will want to use the harmonic balancer (damper) from the LS1. They are sometimes tough to pull and you’ll want to get the correct puller AND install tool for the damper.
All-in-all it’s a very easy swap over. Pop up with questions. Use our Conversions And Hybrids section for references and further questions, or you can PM me directly.
NOW……get ready for the 4-5 folks that are about to tell you that the swap is a bad idea because of weight and other various OPINIONS. This site is full of opinions for the last 5 years or so and is dying because of this. Enjoy the journey sir!
Thanks so much for the informative reply and the fair warning about those who may feel it's not a worthy swap. I'm a "live and let live" kind-a guy and have enough experience under my belt to make adult decisions about how to spend my time and money, especially when it comes to my cars. The info you supplied is more than adequate and I've done enough in the engine swap area, that once I've looked over both engine carefully, made some notes, and done some measuring, I'll be able to determine the next steps, however, your information will go a long way into helping me with that decision, so thanks again. I'm following your links on your Chevelle and am really impressed with your knowledge, workmanship and quality.
Be Well, and thanks again.
Phil
