Default First time at the track with my SS

Hi everybody,
A newbie here from NJ. Bought a 2000 SS with an A4 about 3 weeks ago an finally got to take it to Atco last night. The car is bone stock. Nothing at all done to it. It has 13000 miles on it. Well the two runs I got were a 14.01 @ 101.16. That was leaving it in drive and just mashing the gas. The second run was 13.99 @ 101.20. I stalled it to about 1200 and shifted manually at 5800. What a TURD! Well I have my to do list for Sunday which will include the Slp cold air package, and some free mods. I'll try again on Friday to see if those help my time. Well just wanted to say hi to you all. Let the mods begin . Don

I feel ya. I have a 2000 M6 and spun like hell to 8, 14.00X's in a row. I trapped at 105.68, so that is a glimmer of hope! I pick up my headers this next weekend

I was at the Island Dragway last night (Great Meadows NJ). Humidity was a bear. Anyways, I've learned the hard way that you're gonna need traction to significantly lower your times. Good Luck with your modding.

Don't manually shift your A4, you will run slower that way and it seems to make those trannys fall apart sooner. Just put it in "D" and stall it up a bit.

I'll second the don't shift manually. For the exact reasons Nineball has listed.

When my 98' A4 T/A was stock I would bring the cra up against the break to around 1200-1400 and roll into the gas as quickly as I could without breaking traction.

W/NO mods the best my car did was mid 13's.So you're not too far away at this point

Keep praticing and times will improve.

Good luck!

The first time I went to the track with my SS, I ran 14.1's @ 101 mph. That was on street tires and bone stock. The next time I had a lid and cut-out with drag radials and ran 13.6 @ 103. The tires and mods helped me a lot but also I learned how to drive it better. Me personally, I think the best mod is to know your car! Welcome to the board!!!!

As mentioned, leave it in D and let the computer do the shifting. Also (I know someone here will disagree) I have seen a 4/10's improvement on 3 different LS1 cars by cooling them down between runs. I know it looks stupid to push your brand new street car through the staging lanes, but unless you have a manual switch or reprogramed fan setting the fans dont come on until like 220 deg's and that is just too hot. On the dyno, mine made the most power at 180 deg. At 220-230 you will most likely get detonation and timing retard. One big disadvantage to cooling it down between rounds is the tires cool down as well which makes traction more difficult (especially if you are making more power) and the automatic trannies cool down which, if they get too cool, delays the upshift and causes you to bump the rev limiter. Good Luck.

stall up to 1200 and leave it in drive...ill say your next run will either be 13.5-13.7 if you do that good luck...and that doesnt seem to bad for manual shifting 13.9

Both of my friends Camaro's 1999 & 2001 did 13.2xx @105 bone stock. Left it in Overdrive and just mashed it off the line with minimal spining. But just keep practicing it will get better take into account that we are at sea level.

Same here, don't manually shift it. I managed to get a 13.4 @ 104.2 with leaving the car in 3rd and a 2.1 60' with 4 yr old tires. Then later on I found out I should have left it in overdrive. That was with the loudmouth and lid and the crappy 2.73s. Good luck.

Get a converter and you will be in the mid to low 13's right away.

I thought leaving it in D or OD gives you the same results. I have done both and i dont see any difference. What have other guys seen? Any difference in ET? I know my tranny hits the rev more in D on the 2nd to 3rd shift. Thats why i have been racing in OD.

There was a tech question in Camaro World Magazine concerning this topic.Answer in
Magazine stated that manually selecting gear in an A4 automatically lowers the
transmissions line pressure which in turn will delay and slower the shift.Fastest shifts
will occur with selector in normal driving position.OD(clutch within torque convertor)
will not engage under a WOT condition as it is an MPG economy feature.

thats NOT correct. when the shifter is in 1 or 2, there is MORE line pressue going through the tranny then if it were in first or second with the shifter itself in D or OD.

also, nobody said shifting the car manually was supposed to shift it "faster" than the computer. all your doing is clicking it into the next gear...however, when my car was stock and untuned, i found my stock shiftpoints to be a little low and i was able to pick up about .15 seconds by holding the shifts a little bit longer....flame me if you want, but on a STOCK car (don't tell me about modded ones, i agree its pointless), manually shifting can pick u up some time if you get the timing down...too early and the car shifts itself, too late and you bang the rev limiter.

tuned and stalled, now i leave the car in D to make a pass (there is a reason not to leave it in OD, but i can't remember it offhand).
