Simplified, bracket racing is giving the slower car a head start sufficient enough that, all things being equal, the car's would be in a dead heat when they cross the finish line.
Now, that being said, I could fill page after page on the nuances and varying opinions on the best ways to win in bracket racing, but I won't because my hands will hurt and I have a guitar lesson this afternoon.
Bracket racing is very fun to do, but not much fun to watch, to the general public anyway. They don't really like watching head starts and the faster car losing... understandably, of course.
I would love to answer any questions anybody might have to the best of my knowledge and ability.

They also host several $5000-$10,000 to win races throughout the year.
Huntsville was also the home of the first Million-Dollar Bracket race. (Our track operator is still the Promoter for the Million, but he moved it to Montgomery Motorsports Park and now Memphis Motorsports Park due to parking restraints at HuntsVegas!
Take care, good luck!

In Bracket Racing, you have a good chance of winning over a guy in a 500+ cubic inch 69 Camaro too that run's 9.70's.
It goes both ways and makes the playing field much more level!

Get that beast H/C'ed and see what it'll do! I am just saying as far as being able to be competitive without completely draining the bank account, bracket racing is a great alternative.
And it is evident, in my opinion, but the HUGE purses paid by bracket racing promoters. How many of you can go run your cars heads up and win more in one weekend than NHRA Top Fuel winners get (including contingencies!)?
And there are more races paying between $5,000 and $20,000 than you could possibly run.
That is all I am saying. As far as spectator enjoyment and sheer adrenaline, heads up is the way to go, but I know (personally) at least a dozen guys that make 6-figures a year and don't have a "job" they just race year round. And they have less in their complete operation (cars, trailers, motorhomes, spare parts and all) than you will find in ANY NHRA Pro-Stock car. NHRA Top-Fuel pays $40,000 to WIN, Pro Stock pays $20,000. The million dollar bracket race pays out over $200,000 to the winner every october.
Like I said, I am not arguing that heads up is not a thrill to watch and drive, but don't knock us "brake liters".
