Default the new guy

i guess im the new guy now, well i dont own an LS1.... yet. i have a 1979 trans am WS6 originally with a oldsmobile 403. i was in the middle of honing the block when i noticed some pitting in one of the cylinders and with the cylinders in a small block 403 being siamezed i was limited on how far i could bore the block out. so basicly im stuck with a 79 trans am with a bad block. since the 403 is such weak block i am not going to pursue that stock motor anymore. i am trying to decide between a complete LS1/T56 swap or a 454, so if anyone has any imput i am open to suggestions.

Welcome to the site. You could build a high compression head/camed ls1 That would probly put you well over the power the the old 403 would make.

Cool

........ HI THERE...A stock LS1 will put you ahead by far of a '79 403 !!!!!!!!! I bet they did not have more than 220 hp, 250 tq. Will be a nice car whatever you put in it..you are right though, get rid of that engine...even a half decent 350 would be cheaper and better in the long run.. A 400 would be better if you have $$$..400's are much more scarce and more expensive if you were gonna go carbed.and keep it kinda original....[just a thought]

thanks guys, yea the stock #'s for the 403 are 185hp and 320lbft of torque. but even if the torque #'s are lower on the LS1 the potential for more power is there, and it isnt on the 403.
