Greetings & info...
Prior projects have been:
A 1984 RX-7 with a Gen I 383 & T5 (overheated & sold, but learned a lot about engine swaps). I've attached a couple of pics of it.
My 1995 Trans Am- bought a motor & tranny from a wrecked Z28 & ended up selling the tranny. I had the motor redone by a friend with an Eagle all forged roatating assembly, 9:1 CR pistons, LT4 heads & intake, and a GM Hotcam. I also picked up a rebuilt T56. I built a rear-mount turbo/FMIC setup for this car since at the time I couldn't afford the STS setup (I like to tinker anyway). This car dynoed 498 RWHP & 579 RWTQ at around 12 PSI. It still needs some tuning, but it is real expensive here.
After the TA was more or less operational, I was looking for another Jap car for my next V8 swap, since I still had the 80K stock motor & T56 from the TA. Taking what was learned from the Mazda, I bought an incomplete 1975 280Z. I picked up a set of ported LT1 heads and installed another Hotcam & 1.6 RR as well as a 52mm TB. I adapted the LT1 harness to the Datsun's harness & so far it seems like almost everything works! I have been rebuilding this one a little at a time and have been able to jump all the hurdles so far. I'm hoping to be done with it within a couple of months.
Shortly after getting the Datsun, I had a chance to buy a one-owner '88 Supra here in FL very cheap. The problem was it had broken down (I suspect a blown head gasket- common ailment on these cars) and been parked outside. The spare tire well had rusted through & the dash had a wide crack in it. I found a wrecked '91 on Ebay & bought it. So far, I've cleaned & sealed the gas tank and added a high pressure fuel pump (less $ than stock LOL). I pulled the dash, cut out the tire well & welded it into the '88. This car will be far less of a project than the Datsun since it is complete to start with.
One of the big hassles on the Datsun was mounting the accessories (Alt/AC). I ended up using both F-body and Vette brackets and making my own compressor mounts- it was too wide to fit otherwise. With this in mind, for the Supra, which has a slightly wider engine bay, I was looking first at a Gen I setup lke in this car, or another LT1/T56 since I have a few
leftover parts. After doing a lot of research, I found the LQ9 truck motor seems like an affordable compact package that has a lot of power potential, so that is what I'm in the market for now. I will continue my education here as I have zero knowledge of the Gen III motor but have read a lot of good things about it. I've found decent (i.e. mature) websites make the difference in helping me in what I like to do with my cars. I belong & contribute financially to Camaroz28.com and HybridZ. I found a lot of ignorant bias on most of the Supra websites when someone mentions swapping in a Chevy V8, so I have decided not to become too involved there.
On the horizon? I have a '65 Corvair (not the convertible in my sig- too pretty to mod) that would be trick to mount a Gen III & C5 transxle into. I've also got the bug for a yellow C5/six speed convertible.
I also have a '98 Durango that will someday receive a Mopar stroker motor & HD tranny.
Oh, I neglected to mention a garage that is bigger than my house and a great spouse that tolerates my 4 wheel addictions/additions to the family
