What started as a bleak morning for local utility and road crews only got worse as the morning wore on and trees started to fall under the weight of the ice that had coated them for hours.
Despite temperatures cresting near the freezing point, the ice still clung to trees and power lines late into the afternoon as crews worked to restore power and clear roads.
“We had a lot of limbs come down,” said Rob Gallmeyer, electric department supervisor for Columbia City, as he and other utility workers drove the streets and looked for potential problems with the lines.
Throughout the morning crews worked to restore power to the east side of Columbia City, which was more affected by power outages than the west side of town, according to Gallmeyer.
He said the main problem of the day was branches and trees falling on lines rather than the weight of the ice breaking the lines themselves.
If all went as planned, he said nearly all customers in Columbia City should have service restored by the end of Friday, with the exception of a couple of homes that had their own service lines severed.
Streetlights on Whitley Street and near Parkview Whitley Hospital will be off until Monday due to streetlight wires being knocked down as well.
Some city customers in the county had been without power since 7:30 a.m. Friday, but calls regarding the outages weren’t phoned in until mid-afternoon, according to Gallmeyer.
South Whitley also saw its share of utility problems, with numerous lines being knocked down and some sparking fires in the trees that fell on them.
Many Indiana Michigan Power/American Electric Power customers and Northeastern REMC customers were also without power for much of the day.
A spokesperson for I&M said Friday that customers should plan for “an extended outage” as crews from nearby states and throughout Indiana decended on the Fort Wayne area.
According to I&M, additional crews have arrived from southwest Michigan, South Bend, Elkhart, Kentucky and West Virginia.
In all, about 100 additional crews, or about 350 personnel, have arrived, according to information on I&M’s Web site.
County dispatch records show that numerous reports were also forwarded to REMC regarding downed power lines along their poles.
Aside from electric problems, drivers and county highway employees found themselves dealing with slushy roads and downed trees.
Keiser Road was completely blocked about a half-mile west of state Route 9 by a large tree that hadn’t fallen on the road, but all its branches were leaning over far enough to touch the road.
A large tree down across the 2100 block of East Linker Road at Tri-Lakes also blocked travel.
County highway employees were working Friday afternoon to get road closed signs up in areas that couldn’t be easily cleared.
Initial reports indicated highway employees would be taking a few trucks home and start again early Saturday with road clearing efforts.
Several local township fire departments also kept busy throughout the afternoon with numerous reports of electric transformers either exploding or catching fire."
The problem was the yoke was 2000th of an inch larger in diameter than my stock shaft which worked perfectly fine and is still being used..
Anyways that difference in diameter was to tight for the bushing and I guess from the friction it heated up and expanded a little bit and spit out the seal after about 4 1/2 miles of driving..
The yoke was discolored on both sides of where the bushing would be..
I even got an email from PST yesterday because they had concerns after they had noticed it on the yoke So they emailed me making sure, recommending and hoping that I changed the bushing,
The bushing, seal and tranny fluid was replaced at my cost which was another thing that pissed me off..
The original PST yoke was 1.502 and the new one is 1.497 so hopefully it shouldnt be a problem..
So I am fine with this and Done with this post, it is time for me to move on and finish other things needed on my car..
