I have a 8500 for years - have the same issue w/ the laser band, had to shut it off as well.

You can't go wrong with the V1 or the Escort, I chose the Escort because I thought the V1 was BIG and UGLY, just my opinion though.

Guys with the V1...how do you shut off the X-band? Is it in the manual, or was it programmed for you during an upgrade? I have no need for the X-band either, but have no idea how to disable it.

I am very happy with my V1, but I considered the Escort too. In the end I decided that the arrows would be more useful to me than the GPS tagging.
This is a good review:

Thanks SportRedSS. Not too many (if any at all) X-band patrol cars in this area, but the stores near my house makes this think light up like a Christmas Tree every time I pull out of my driveway.

Wanted a V1 but couldn't justify the price ended up buying a 965 at Circuit city GOB for $102.00. They generally retail for $229.99.

For under $200.00 this thing is a good detector. Although yesterday I saw a cop do a laser point at a car and it didn't pick it up.

I love my 9500i. It's a nice touch that it will display your speed when the detector goes off so you don't have to look down at your speedo. I actually set mine so it displays my speed at all times. Only thing I don't like is the fact that it was supposed to be upgradeable via USB, however then they came out with the 9500ix which has the upgrades and the immediate ability to update via USB with speed camera locations, etc. Although you can get the 9500i updated if you send it in and then I think you can update it like the 9500ix.

well that stinks by oh well it works great.. i can deal without the speed cameras since there only in philly in my area.. Yea i programmed mine to show the speed all the time also. The text highway just got boring lol. The voice prompts are awesome and the thing is frickin loud!! I love it b/c my old escort solo s2 with the windows down and radio going, could not be heard... The displays nice and crisp also..

How do you plug the unit in? I didnt want to go and fork out another 30 bucks for the hardwire kit, so i just un coiled the cord and ran it in the dash down the door under the steering panel into the whole of the lower compart below the radio. I then just plg it in when i need it. You only see about 3 inches of the wire which goes from the dash to the unit..

You're rarely going to get a warning beep when they're gunning another car...unless it's a few feet in front of you and the gunner is quite far away. Since laser spreads only a small bit from the gun to the object, you're less likely to get "overspray" like you would with normal radar.

That said, I think you're 965 is performing as it should.

The voice alerts actually I annoy me I turned them off haha. And I have mine hardwired. However I just got the $10 hardwire cord, not the one with the mute button and light on it.

I am DEFINITELY finding more K-band in the area...places that make no sense. Must be picking up motion sensors from people's home alarms, from what I can tell.

Four things I have noticed with owning radar detectors.
1. Leaving them in direct sunlight kills the laser detection and life of the unit.
2. New toyotas have laser assisted cruise control. Get one of them behind you and it'll beep forever.
3. Airport glide scopes will set off laser.
4. Ohio Highway Patrol still uses X band knowing that many radar detectors are turned off (city mode).
