Alternative intake setup?
on the open filter intakes. They are not testing the intake, even if they use a dyno. The hood is up, all they are testing is an open filter in open, relatively cool air vs underhood air. Of course they are going to show a gain over a stock system that draws a more convoluted path through the standard intake instead of an open filter in ambient temps.
I have seen a few closed hood dyno sheets on other vehicles and they did not show a measurable difference in power over a stock set-up.
A difference/improvement in throttle response almost always means a leaner mixture. Of those that have an aftermarket intake, did you have to change your fueling, richen it up?
If you are lean, you get great response, but you also get knock and rapidly rising cylinder temps, neither of which is a good thing for power.
I think the smooth tubing and perhaps shielding the stock intake airbox intake from engine bay heat will show at least as much gain as any open element intake.
